Why I was surprised to learn Nebraska requires uninsured motorist coverage

I used to think the same—just get the cheapest thing and hope for the best. But after my neighbor got hit by someone with no insurance, I realized how risky that is. He ended up with a totaled car and a mountain of bills. Now I always double-check what’s actually included. Some of those “extras” feel pointless, but uninsured motorist coverage is one I won’t skip anymore. It’s not worth the gamble, even if it costs a bit more each month.

Honestly, I’m in the same boat right now—just trying to figure out what’s actually important and what’s just upselling. Hearing stories like your neighbor’s makes me rethink skipping stuff like uninsured motorist coverage, though. It’s wild how one accident can mess up your whole year. I used to roll my eyes at all the “add-ons,” but now I’m kinda paranoid about missing something important. Guess it’s better to be safe than sorry, even if it means a few extra bucks each month.

I get where you’re coming from—insurance can feel like a maze of “extras” that add up fast. But after seeing a friend deal with an uninsured driver, I stopped thinking of it as just another upsell. One fender bender and suddenly you’re out thousands if you’re not covered. Have you looked at what your state actually requires? Sometimes the minimums aren’t enough, but it’s tough to know where to draw the line. I guess peace of mind is worth a few extra bucks, even if it stings a little each month.

Honestly, I get the “peace of mind” thing, but sometimes it feels like they’re just piling on fees. My cousin’s been driving for years and never needed to use uninsured coverage. Makes me wonder if it’s really worth it or just playing it safe.

Honestly, I was in the same boat when I started looking at insurance stuff. It felt like every time I thought I had the basics down, there was another “required” thing tacked on. Uninsured motorist coverage especially made me pause. Like, if I’m doing everything right, why should I have to pay for someone else not having their act together? My dad’s been driving since the 80s and he’s never once had to use that coverage either. Makes you wonder if it’s just a money grab.

But then, my roommate’s story kind of changed my mind a bit. She got rear-ended by someone who took off, and the police never found the guy. Her car was messed up, and if she hadn’t had that coverage, she’d have been totally out of luck. She’s still annoyed about paying extra every month, but she said it was a lifesaver that one time.

I guess it’s one of those things where you don’t care until you really need it. Still, I wish there was a way to opt out if you’re willing to take the risk. Nebraska making it mandatory kind of takes the choice away, which bugs me, but maybe it’s because too many people skip out otherwise. I’m still not thrilled about the extra cost, but I get why it’s there… sort of. Still feels like a bit much sometimes, though.
