Why I was surprised to learn Nebraska requires uninsured motorist coverage

Honestly, I get the frustration—paying for something you might never use feels like tossing cash into a black hole. But here’s the thing: if you ever do need it, uninsured motorist coverage can save you from some serious financial pain. Medical bills and car repairs add up fast if someone hits you and doesn’t have insurance. It’s kind of like an umbrella... you’re annoyed carrying it around until it suddenly pours. Not fun paying extra every month, but it can really bail you out when things go sideways.

I get the umbrella comparison, but I keep wondering—shouldn’t the focus be on making sure all drivers actually have insurance in the first place?

That makes sense, but isn’t it kind of weird that we have to pay extra because some people don’t follow the rules? I get wanting to be safe, but sometimes it feels like we’re just covering for other people’s mistakes.

Yeah, I totally get what you mean. It does feel kind of unfair that we have to pay more just because some people don’t bother to get insurance. Like, why am I covering for someone else’s bad decision, right? I was talking to my uncle about this (he’s been driving forever), and he said he’s actually had to use uninsured motorist coverage once. The other driver just took off and never got caught. Without that coverage, he would’ve been totally stuck with the bill.

I guess the idea is that even if the law says everyone should have insurance, there’s always gonna be a few who slip through the cracks. Still, it’s frustrating. You’d think with all the tech and stuff, it’d be easier to catch people driving without insurance. But then again, I guess the coverage is just there as a backup, kind of like a seatbelt—you hope you never need it, but you’re glad it’s there if something goes wrong.

Anyway, I agree, it’s weird. But I guess it’s better than getting stuck with a giant repair bill because someone else didn’t follow the rules.

Honestly, I was kinda shocked when I found out about this too. I just started driving last year, and when my mom and I went to get insurance, the agent was like, “You have to have uninsured motorist coverage. It’s Nebraska law.” I remember thinking, “Wait, isn’t that what regular insurance is for?” It felt like double-dipping or something.

But then, not even two months after I got my license, my friend’s car got sideswiped in a parking lot. No note, nothing. The security camera footage was useless—just a blurry car speeding off. She didn’t have uninsured motorist coverage (her parents thought it was pointless), and she ended up paying for the repairs herself. That’s when it clicked for me why they make you have it. There are just too many people who either don’t care or can’t afford insurance, and they’re not exactly going to stick around if they hit you.

I get what people are saying about it feeling unfair. Like, why should responsible drivers have to pay more because others don’t follow the rules? But at the same time, I’d rather be annoyed about an extra fee than be stuck with a $2,000 repair bill because someone else bailed. It’s kind of like locking your bike even though you wish nobody would steal bikes in the first place.

Still, it bugs me that with all the cameras and license plate readers, people can just drive around uninsured and not get caught. Maybe there’s no perfect fix. But after seeing what happened to my friend, I’m not skipping that coverage anytime soon—even if it does feel like I’m paying for someone else’s screw-up.

It’s wild how many people don’t realize what uninsured motorist coverage actually does until something like your friend’s situation happens. I’ve seen folks come in convinced it’s just a way for insurance companies to squeeze more money out of you, but then they hear a story like that and it suddenly makes a lot more sense. I had a client a few years back who got rear-ended at a stoplight by someone who took off—no insurance, no ID, nothing. Without UM, she would’ve been on the hook for thousands. It’s frustrating, though, because you’re right: it does feel like you’re paying for someone else’s irresponsibility.

I’ve always wondered if there’s a better way to enforce insurance requirements. Like, with all the tech out there, why isn’t there a system that flags uninsured vehicles in real time? Or maybe there is and it’s just not being used effectively? Curious if anyone’s actually had a claim paid out under their UM coverage—did it go smoothly, or was it a hassle?
