Why I was surprised to learn Nebraska requires uninsured motorist coverage

Honestly, I used to roll my eyes at that line item on my bill too—felt like paying for a unicorn sighting. But the more I looked into it, the numbers are kind of wild. There are way more uninsured drivers out there than I thought, especially in the Midwest. My cousin got rear-ended last year by a guy with no insurance, and if she hadn’t had that coverage, she’d have been in a world of hurt financially. It’s one of those things you grumble about until you need it... then suddenly it’s your new best friend.

Yeah, I used to question it too, but after driving cross-country a few times, I get why it’s required. You never really know who’s out there on the road. One small fender bender in Kansas last summer—guy didn’t even have a valid license, let alone insurance. That coverage saved me from a ton of headaches. It’s not flashy, but I’d rather have it and not need it than the other way around.

Honestly, I used to roll my eyes at all these extra coverages, but after a couple of close calls—one where a guy literally took off after sideswiping me—I get why Nebraska makes it mandatory. Here’s the thing: if you’re on the road a lot, especially with a less-than-perfect record like mine, you’re just playing with fire without it. Step one: accept it’s not about you being a bad driver, it’s about everyone else. Step two: check your policy and make sure you’re not underinsured. Step three: don’t assume the other guy’s got their act together... because a lot of them don’t.

I used to think the same—like, “how likely is it really that I’ll get hit by someone with no insurance?” But then my neighbor got rear-ended and the other driver just bailed. No insurance, nothing. She was stuck with a pile of bills. It’s wild how many people out there are rolling the dice every day. Do you think the minimum coverage Nebraska requires is actually enough, or do you bump yours up just in case?

I’ve always carried way more than the minimum, honestly. With the kind of car I drive, I just can’t risk it—one accident with an uninsured driver could be a financial nightmare. The state minimums might cover a fender bender, but if you’re dealing with medical bills or a higher-end vehicle, it barely scratches the surface. Have you ever looked into how much it would actually cost to repair or replace your car if something major happened?
