Why I was surprised to learn Nebraska requires uninsured motorist coverage

Yeah, I hear you on that. I used to side-eye that line item on my bill too, thinking it was just another way for insurance to squeeze more out of us. But after hearing stories like yours—and seeing how many folks drive around without proper coverage—it’s hard to argue against it. Nebraska making it mandatory actually makes a lot of sense now.

I haven’t had to use mine (knock on wood), but the hit-and-run thing is what gets me. Seems like there are more of those than people realize, and you never really think it’ll happen until it does. I do wonder, though, if the deductible varies much between companies? Or if some policies sneak in weird exclusions? Insurance paperwork always feels like a maze.

Anyway, glad yours worked out without too much hassle. Makes me want to double-check my own policy details... just in case.

I totally get what you mean about feeling like insurance is just tacking on extra costs. I used to roll my eyes at that part of my bill too, but then my cousin got rear-ended by someone who just took off, and the uninsured coverage saved her a ton of stress (and money). As for deductibles, yeah, they can be all over the place—my friend found out hers was way higher than she thought after an accident. It’s wild how those details can hide in the fine print. Definitely worth checking your policy, just for peace of mind.

Honestly, I used to think uninsured motorist coverage was just another way for them to squeeze more out of me, but after my second fender bender (not my fault, for once), it actually paid off. One thing I always do now: I go through my policy line by line every renewal. It’s a pain, but I’ve caught weird deductible changes before. If you’re in Nebraska, double-check that minimum coverage—sometimes what’s “required” isn’t nearly enough if something big happens.

Honestly, I get where you’re coming from, but I’ve always wondered if the extra coverage is really worth it for everyone. I’ve had insurance for years and never needed to use uninsured motorist—feels like I’m just tossing money away sometimes. Maybe I’ve just been lucky...

I totally get that feeling—paying for something year after year and never using it can feel pointless. I’ve heard that from a lot of folks. But here’s the thing: I had a client a while back who felt the same way, right up until someone ran a red light and totaled her car. The other driver didn’t have insurance, and suddenly that “extra” coverage was the only thing standing between her and a mountain of bills. She told me later she’d never questioned it again.

It’s kind of like wearing a seatbelt, honestly. Most days you don’t need it, but when you do, you’re really glad it’s there. Nebraska making it mandatory probably saves a lot of headaches for people who’d otherwise be left in the lurch. Still, if you’ve never needed it, I can see why it feels like just another line on the bill... luck definitely plays a part, but sometimes it’s just about peace of mind.
