Why I was surprised to learn Nebraska requires uninsured motorist coverage

Honestly, I hear you on the paperwork headache—it’s a pain. But I’ve seen too many folks get wiped out financially because someone else didn’t have coverage. Nebraska’s law might feel heavy-handed, but it’s there for a reason. The premium hikes sting, but compared to footing the bill for an entire accident? I’ll take the grumbling over bankruptcy any day. It’s not perfect, but it beats the alternative.

I get the logic, but I’m still trying to wrap my head around why it’s mandatory for everyone. If I’m a careful driver and don’t want the extra coverage, shouldn’t that be my call? Or is there something I’m missing about how these accidents actually play out?

I used to think the same way—figured my good driving record should let me skip extra costs. Then a friend got hit by someone with no insurance, and it was a nightmare. Even careful drivers can’t control what others do out there. The coverage isn’t really about your own habits, it’s about protecting yourself from everyone else’s mistakes.

Honestly, I used to grumble about paying for uninsured motorist coverage too—felt like just another way to squeeze more money out of us. But after hearing stories like your friend’s, I started thinking of it as a backup plan. Here’s how I look at it: 1) Figure out what your deductible is, 2) Check if your policy covers hit-and-runs, and 3) Weigh the cost against the risk. Has anyone actually had to use their uninsured coverage in Nebraska? Curious how smooth (or not) the process was.

I actually had to use my uninsured motorist coverage a couple years back, right here in Nebraska. Some guy ran a red light, totaled my minivan, and then just took off. At first, I was pretty stressed—didn’t even know if my policy would help since the other driver disappeared. Turns out, the process was smoother than I expected. My insurance rep walked me through the whole thing, and after a bit of paperwork and a police report, they covered my medical bills and helped with a rental while I figured out a new car.

I used to grumble about that extra cost too, but after that mess, I’m honestly glad it was there. The deductible wasn’t too bad either, all things considered. I’d say it’s worth double-checking your policy details, especially for hit-and-runs. It’s one of those things you hope you never need, but man, when you do, it’s a lifesaver.
