Why I was surprised to learn Nebraska requires uninsured motorist coverage

Man, the paperwork is no joke. I once had a guy try to hand me a shoebox full of receipts and napkin notes after his car got totaled—said it was “all the proof” I’d need. If only it worked like that, right? And yeah, those state minimums barely cover a fender bender these days. Folks are always shocked when they realize what’s actually coming out of their pocket after a loss. It’s wild how fast those numbers add up.

It’s wild how many folks think a pile of receipts is all it takes to get reimbursed—there’s so much more to it, especially with older cars. I’ve seen people get caught off guard by those state minimums, too. They look reasonable on paper, but one accident and you realize how little they actually cover. That uninsured motorist coverage in Nebraska is actually a pretty smart move, given how many drivers are out there without proper insurance. It’s not just about protecting your car, but your wallet too.

Honestly, I get why they require it, but sometimes it feels like just another thing tacked onto the bill. I mean, yeah, there are a lot of uninsured drivers, but if you’re already paying for your own insurance, shouldn’t that be enough? Maybe I’m missing something, but it seems a little overkill.

I used to think the same thing, honestly. When I was getting my learner’s permit, my dad and I went through all the different parts of car insurance, and I remember being kind of annoyed that uninsured motorist coverage was even a thing. Like, we’re already paying for regular insurance—why should we have to pay extra just because some people don’t follow the rules?

But then, right after I started driving, one of my friends’ parents got hit by someone who didn’t have insurance at all. Their car was totaled, and it turned into this huge headache with medical bills and repairs. Their own insurance only covered so much, and if they hadn’t had the uninsured motorist thing, they would’ve been in a really bad spot financially.

It still feels like a lot of extra costs sometimes, but after seeing what happened to them, I get why Nebraska makes it a requirement. There’s just so much out of your control on the road… I’d rather be a little overprotected than stuck with a massive bill because someone else didn’t do their part.

I totally get where you’re coming from—it does feel like we’re paying for every possible “what if” out there. I used to grumble about it too, especially since my old Mustang barely leaves the garage except for sunny weekends. But then I started thinking… what if someone rear-ends me at a stoplight and they don’t have insurance? That’s a nightmare, especially with classic car parts being so hard to find. I guess it’s one of those things you hope you never need, but you’re glad it’s there if you do. Still, sometimes I wonder if there’s a better way to handle it than just tacking on more fees.
