Do you really need extra insurance for a rental in Montana?

I’ve seen a lot of folks surprised when their credit card coverage didn’t actually pay out for loss of use, even though the fine print said it would. Did you check with your card company about what documentation they’d need if you ever had to file a claim? Sometimes they want stuff rental companies won’t provide, which can get messy fast.

That’s exactly what worries me.

I’ve heard stories where people needed a “fleet utilization log” or some weird paperwork that the rental desk just laughed at. Makes me wonder if paying extra for the rental company’s insurance is worth it just for peace of mind, especially in places like Montana where you might be hours from the nearest help. Has anyone actually had a claim go smoothly with just credit card coverage?

- Totally get the concern.
- Credit card coverage sounds great until you’re in the weeds with paperwork no one’s ever heard of.
- I’ve never had a claim go through without at least a week of back-and-forth.
- Out in Montana, I’d rather pay extra than risk being stranded or stuck arguing over forms.
- Peace of mind sometimes beats saving a few bucks, especially when you’re hours from civilization.

I get the whole peace of mind thing, but I’m actually leaning the other way for my first trip out there. I did a ton of reading and, step by step, it seems like if you double-check your credit card’s rental coverage and call them ahead of time, you can avoid a lot of the claim headaches. I’m not saying it’s perfect, but if you keep all your receipts and take photos of the car before and after, it feels manageable. Maybe I’ll regret it, but I’d rather try using what I already pay for before shelling out more.

I totally get where you’re coming from. I did something similar on a trip to Colorado—just made sure my credit card covered rentals, called to confirm, and took a bunch of photos. Like you said,

if you keep all your receipts and take photos of the car before and after, it feels manageable.
It’s not totally foolproof, but honestly, I never had any issues. Just keep your paperwork handy and you’ll probably be fine. Sometimes the extra insurance just feels like overkill.
