Do you really need extra insurance for a rental in Montana?

Honestly, I’ve had a rental in Montana during elk season and let’s just say, those “comprehensive” policies suddenly look a lot more appealing when you see the size of the wildlife. Ever tried arguing with a rental company about a rock chip? Not fun. Do you trust your credit card to bail you out if a hailstorm hits? I’m not that brave.

Can’t say I’d trust my credit card coverage either, especially after reading all the fine print. They always seem to find an exception when you actually need them. I’ve got a family and the last thing I want is to deal with paperwork and finger-pointing if something happens—especially out in Montana where “something” could mean a deer, hailstorm, or who knows what else.

I get that the rental companies push their insurance hard, but after seeing what a cracked windshield costs (and how fast it can happen), I’m not convinced it’s overkill. Has anyone actually had their personal auto insurance cover a rental claim without a hassle? Or do they just find a reason to drag it out?

Totally get where you’re coming from. I’ve actually had to file a claim with my own auto insurance for a rental (not in Montana, but still rural). Here’s what happened:

- My policy covered it, but it took weeks of back and forth.
- They wanted every document under the sun.
- Ended up paying my deductible, and the rates went up after.

Honestly, the rental company’s coverage is overpriced, but sometimes it’s just easier for peace of mind—especially when you’ve got kids and don’t want to deal with the headache. I wish there was a perfect answer, but I lean toward extra coverage if I’m far from home.

Extra Insurance Feels Like Overkill Sometimes

- I get why people want the extra coverage, but I’m not sure it’s always worth it.
- My regular car insurance says rentals are covered (even out of state), so I figure why pay twice?
- The paperwork sounds annoying, but honestly, I’d rather save the money unless it’s a super sketchy area or wild weather.
- Maybe I’ll regret it if something happens, but right now, the extra cost just feels like a scare tactic from rental companies... anyone else feel like that sometimes?

Totally get where you're coming from. I swear, the rental counter spiel always sounds like they're prepping you for a Mad Max road trip. I usually skip it too if my own insurance covers me. Only time I caved was during a Montana blizzard... but that was mostly just me being paranoid about sliding into a moose.
