Do you really need extra insurance for a rental in Montana?

Honestly, I get where you’re coming from—Montana roads can be rough on rentals. But have you checked if your own car insurance or credit card covers rentals? Sometimes folks pay double for coverage they already have. Ever had a claim actually denied? Just curious, because in my experience, it’s rare unless there’s something weird in the paperwork.

Honestly, I’ve never bothered with the extra insurance. My regular policy covers rentals, and my credit card backs it up. I’d rather spend that cash on a good meal after a long drive. Unless you’re planning to rally off-road, it just feels like overkill.

That’s a pretty reasonable approach, honestly. If your personal auto policy and credit card both cover rentals, you’re not missing much by skipping the extra insurance at the counter. Most people don’t realize how much overlap there is. The only time I’ve seen folks regret it is when they’re driving in unfamiliar terrain or during winter—Montana roads can get wild. But for regular highway driving, you’re probably fine. Just double-check those policy details every now and then... companies love to sneak in exclusions.

I was just looking into this for my first rental, actually. It’s kind of wild how much fine print there is—my credit card covers a lot, but then I noticed it doesn’t do anything if I rent a truck or go off-roading. Not that I’m planning on driving through a blizzard in Montana, but still... makes me double-check everything. Feels like insurance companies are always one step ahead with those sneaky exclusions.

I’ve run into that too—my card covers most rentals, but the exclusions are always buried in the details. I remember thinking I was set until I realized “luxury” models and SUVs were excluded on my policy. It’s frustrating, especially when you’re paying extra for peace of mind. Has anyone actually had to file a claim with their credit card insurance? I’m curious how smoothly that process goes, or if they find ways to wriggle out of it...
