Trying to pick between Shelter and State Farm for homeowners insurance here in MO. Shelter's local vibe is kinda nice, but State Farm seems to have more options and maybe better discounts? I’ve heard Shelter can be a little slow with claims, but honestly, I’ve never had to file one (knock on wood). Anyone had good or bad experiences with either? Would love to hear which you’d go with and why.

Had a neighbor whose basement flooded last year—State Farm handled it pretty quick, but the paperwork nearly drove him to drink. Shelter’s adjuster once brought cookies to my aunt’s house after her kitchen fire... but then took three weeks to get the claim moving. Both have their quirks. If you like that small-town touch, Shelter’s got it, but State Farm’s tech and discounts are hard to beat. Depends if you want cookies or convenience, I guess.

I get wanting that personal touch, but honestly, I’d rather have my claim sorted fast than get cookies and a wait. Did either of them actually pay out what was expected, or was there a bunch of back-and-forth over the amount? That’s the real headache for me.

Honestly, I had State Farm last year when my garage roof caved in (thanks, Missouri weather). They were quick with the payout, but I did have to send like 47 photos and call twice to clarify some numbers. No cookies, but at least I got my check before the next rainstorm. I’d take that over waiting around for “personal touch” any day.

Shelter’s “personal touch” is overrated if you’re stuck waiting for a check, honestly. I had Shelter for a while—my neighbor swore by them, but when a tree branch trashed my fence, it took forever to get someone out here. Felt like I was chasing them down. State Farm’s not perfect, but at least you know what you’re getting. I’d rather deal with a mountain of paperwork and get paid fast than sit around listening to someone talk about “community values” while my property’s still a mess.

Discounts are nice, but they’re usually smoke and mirrors—by the time you add up the “extras,” it’s not that different. I’d go with whoever gets you back on your feet quicker. Missouri weather doesn’t wait for anyone.
