Letting friends drive your car in MN: better to add them or rely on permissive use?

Seems like there’s a big difference between a quick grocery run and a full-on weekend road trip.

Yeah, that’s exactly what makes me nervous too. I’ve let my brother borrow my car for errands, and I always wonder if that’s “occasional” enough. The fine print on these policies is wild—sometimes it feels like they’re just waiting for a reason to deny a claim. Honestly, I’d probably add someone if they were driving more than just once in a while. The peace of mind is worth it, even if it costs a bit more.

I’ve been reading through my policy and honestly, “occasional” is so vague it drives me nuts. Like, what’s the actual threshold? Once a week? Twice a month? I’d rather just pay a little extra and not have to worry about some technicality if something goes wrong. The peace of mind seems worth it, especially with how insurance companies can be about claims.

Honestly, I get where you’re coming from about the vagueness, but paying extra every month just to cover “what if” scenarios feels a bit much for me. Here’s how I look at it:

- Permissive use is there for a reason. If your buddy borrows your car once in a blue moon, that’s what it’s meant for.
- The insurance companies do love their gray areas, but unless you’re handing out your keys every weekend, they’re probably not going to hassle you over an accident.
- Adding someone permanently can jack up your premium, especially if they’ve got a less-than-stellar record. Not always worth it if it’s just occasional use.
- I’ve let friends drive my car on road trips or in emergencies, and never had an issue with claims (knock on wood). Maybe I’ve just been lucky.

I guess if you’re super anxious about it, the peace of mind might be worth the cost. But for me, unless someone’s using my car regularly—like weekly—I’d rather save the cash and trust the “occasional” clause will hold up. It’s all a gamble either way, right?

Honestly, I think your approach makes a lot of sense for most folks. You nailed it with this:

Permissive use is there for a reason. If your buddy borrows your car once in a blue moon, that’s what it’s meant for.

Insurance is all about risk, and if you’re only lending out the car here and there, odds are on your side. I do get why some people pay extra for peace of mind, but if you’re watching your budget, it’s hard to justify unless the borrowing is frequent. Out of curiosity, have you ever had an insurer actually question a claim because of this? Most people I talk to haven’t...

Yeah, I’m with you—permissive use is pretty much built for those random times a friend needs your car. Never had an issue with insurance questioning a claim, either. Had my brother borrow mine once after his broke down, and it was all smooth sailing. If someone’s driving your car every weekend, though, that’s probably when you want to add them. Otherwise, seems like overkill.
