Letting friends drive your car in MN: better to add them or rely on permissive use?

Yeah, I’ve been there - had a buddy borrowing my car for a few weeks while his was in the shop. My insurance agent started asking those same pointed questions. I didn’t think much of it at first, but after my last claim (which was a nightmare), I’m way more cautious. Permissive use is fine for the occasional drive, but if someone’s using your car regularly, they’ll find any excuse to deny a claim if something goes sideways. Adding them upfront just feels safer, even if it bumps up the premium a bit. Not worth the gamble in my experience.

Yeah, I get what you mean. Insurance companies are like hawks when it comes to “regular use.” I let my cousin borrow my car for a couple weeks once and honestly, I was sweating bullets the whole time. Didn’t add him, just crossed my fingers nothing would happen. Looking back, probably not the smartest move... but man, those premiums add up fast. It’s always a toss-up between saving a few bucks and sleeping easy at night.

Totally get that. I’ve been in the same boat - my brother needed my car for work for a month, and I just kept hoping nothing would happen. The thing is, insurance companies love those gray areas. If something had gone wrong, I’m not convinced they’d have my back. Honestly, paying a bit more upfront to add someone feels like less of a gamble than risking a denied claim and a huge headache later. But yeah, those premium hikes sting...

I’ve wondered about this too, especially since I’m still on my parents’ policy as a student. My friend wanted to borrow my car for a weekend trip, and I kept thinking - if something happened, would “permissive use” actually cover it, or would the insurance company find some loophole? It’s wild how unclear the rules can be. Is it really worth risking it just to save a few bucks, or am I just being paranoid?

I get what you mean - it feels like insurance is just waiting to trip us up with the fine print. I’ve always heard “permissive use” covers you for the basics, but if your friend gets into a bad accident, I wonder if the coverage limits are lower or if they’d start nitpicking about whether it was really “occasional.” Has anyone actually had to file a claim in a situation like this? Seems like there’s a big difference between a quick grocery run and a full-on weekend road trip.
