Letting friends drive your car in MN: better to add them or rely on permissive use?

Yeah, I’ve wondered about this too. The whole “permissive use” thing sounds simple until you realize insurance companies can twist it however they want. I’m on a student budget, so I hate the idea of my premium going up, but honestly, the risk of a denied claim freaks me out more. Is it even worth saving a few bucks if you end up paying out of pocket after an accident? I’d rather just be upfront and list someone if they’re using my car regularly. The gray area just seems like a headache waiting to happen.

Honestly, I’ve been in that exact spot. Last summer, my roommate borrowed my car for a weekend camping trip. I figured “permissive use” would cover it, but then I started reading the fine print and got paranoid. What if something happened out there? In the end, I just called my agent and added him for the month. It cost a bit more, but the peace of mind was worth it. Is it just me, or do these policies always feel like a trap waiting to spring?

Yeah, I get that uneasy feeling too. I drive a lot for work, so I’m super careful - if someone’s using my car more than once, I just add them. Permissive use sounds simple, but the exclusions are sneaky. Not worth the risk for me.

I hear you, but honestly, I just don’t see the point in adding someone for a one-off. Insurance companies love to nickel and dime us. I read all the fine print - unless someone’s basically living at my place or driving weekly, I stick with permissive use. Never had a claim denied yet, knock on wood.

I totally get where you’re coming from. I’ve done a bunch of road trips with friends, and honestly, I’ve never added anyone for just a weekend or a quick drive. Permissive use has always covered us, at least in MN. I mean, yeah, the exclusions can be a little murky, but unless someone’s basically borrowing your car every other day, it feels like overkill to go through the hassle of adding them.

Insurance companies are quick to take your money, but not so quick to pay out, right? Still, I always double-check my policy before a big trip, just in case they’ve changed something sneaky in the fine print. So far, no issues. Maybe I’m just lucky, but I’d rather not pay extra unless I absolutely have to. If you’re careful about who you let drive and you trust them, permissive use seems like a pretty safe bet.
