who do you call when your car leaves you stranded?
So yesterday, I'm driving home from work, minding my own business, and BAM - flat tire. Of course, it's raining, because why wouldn't it be? Anyway, I realized I never really thought about who I'd call in situations like this. I ended up just googling and picking the first roadside assistance service that popped up. They were okay, but it got me thinking...do most people around here have a go-to roadside assistance service, or do you just wing it like me?
Figured I'd toss up a quick poll to see what everyone's doing:
- AAA membership all the way
- Insurance company's roadside assistance
- Local towing/repair shop
- Just call a friend or family member
- Wing it and google on the spot (like yours truly)
Feel free to share any stories or recommendations, too. I'm thinking maybe I should get a bit more organized about this stuff, haha.

I wouldn’t rely on picking the first service in a search result, especially in the rain or on a busy roadside. Check whether your insurer already includes roadside assistance, then save that number along with one vetted local provider in your phone. It can avoid both a long search and surprise fees.
Saving a number helps, but verify the details before authorizing the dispatch:
- Exact location of the truck or shop, especially if several businesses have similar names.
- Estimated arrival time, not just “soon.”
- Total out-of-pocket cost, including dispatch, mileage, after-hours, and extra service fees.
- What the roadside plan actually covers. Some limit towing distance or charge separately for labor.
A provider can be legitimate and still leave you with a much higher bill than expected if the plan only covers part of the call.
