Deciding between just liability or going all-in with full coverage on Liberty Mutual

I hear you on the cost—it stings. Here’s how I usually decide: First, check your car’s value versus what you’d pay out of pocket if something happened. Then, think about how much you actually drive and where. I kept full coverage a bit longer than most just because I’d rather not gamble with repairs or theft... even on an older ride. Peace of mind’s worth something, but it really depends on your risk comfort and budget.

Man, “risk comfort” is definitely not my strong suit. I swear, if there’s a pothole or a runaway shopping cart in a parking lot, my car finds it every time. I tried going liability-only for a year to save cash, but ended up regretting it when someone sideswiped me and took off. That out-of-pocket pain was real.

I get the whole “weigh your car’s value” argument, but honestly, my luck is so bad I’d rather pay a bit more each month than roll the dice. Even with an older car, I just can’t trust the universe not to throw me a curveball. Full coverage is like my security blanket at this point… maybe not the most budget-friendly move, but at least I sleep better (and cry less at the repair shop).

I totally get where you’re coming from on the peace of mind thing—been there, done that, and honestly, nothing stings like paying for repairs out of pocket. But I do think there’s a point where full coverage just doesn’t make sense financially, especially with older cars. I used to keep full coverage on my 10-year-old BMW just because I was paranoid about every scratch. After a while, though, the premiums started creeping up, and the payout if anything happened wouldn’t even cover much after depreciation. Eventually, I switched to liability and just stashed the difference in a “car mishap” fund. Weirdly enough, once I did that, my luck seemed to turn around... or maybe I just stopped sweating every ding. Sometimes, letting go of that security blanket can actually be kind of freeing.

Honestly, I get the logic behind dropping full coverage on an older ride, but I’ve seen folks regret it after a hailstorm or a hit-and-run. You mentioned,

“the payout if anything happened wouldn’t even cover much after depreciation.”
That’s true for some cars, but if you’re in an area with high theft or weather risks, sometimes that “security blanket” pays off big time. Maybe worth running the numbers again if your area’s a hotspot—sometimes peace of mind is more than just about dings and scratches.

- Been there, done that—dropped full coverage on my old Accord, then got sideswiped in a parking lot. Out of pocket wasn’t fun.
-

“the payout if anything happened wouldn’t even cover much after depreciation.”
That’s fair, but sometimes the repair bill stings more than you expect.
- Have you checked what your deductible is vs. the car’s value? Sometimes that math changes things, especially if rates jump after a claim.
- Curious—anyone here actually had Liberty Mutual pay out for hail or theft on an older car? Wondering how smooth that process really is.
