just saw a story about a guy in Kansas whose car got totaled by hail, and turns out his insurance didn't cover it.

Yeah, I see this all the time—people think they’re saving money until something random happens. Hail, falling branches, even theft... it’s always the stuff you don’t expect. Comprehensive isn’t that much more in most cases, especially if your car’s outside a lot. It’s one of those things you only regret not having after the fact.

I’ve been looking into insurance options lately, and stories like that really make me second-guess just going with the bare minimum. It’s tempting to save a bit each month, but then you hear about hail or random stuff like a tree branch, and it’s kind of nerve-wracking. I guess it’s a trade-off, but honestly, the extra for comprehensive seems worth it if you park outside a lot. I’d rather pay a little more now than get stuck with a huge bill later.

Can totally relate to that feeling—heard way too many horror stories about random stuff wrecking people’s cars. Honestly, I’d rather cough up a bit more for comprehensive, especially with how unpredictable weather’s been. Had a friend get nailed by a falling branch last year and his basic policy didn’t cover a dime… he still regrets it. It’s one of those things you hope you never need, but when you do, man, you’re glad it’s there.

I get the logic behind going for comprehensive, but honestly, I’ve stuck with basic coverage for years and haven’t regretted it (yet… knock on wood). Here’s my take:

- Insurance companies are happy to sell you every bell and whistle, but half the time, you end up paying more than your car’s worth over a few years.
- Not every area gets crazy hail or falling trees—where I live, the wildest thing I’ve seen is a raccoon on the hood.
- If your car’s older or not worth much, sometimes it just doesn’t make sense to pay extra. My old Civic’s bluebook value is basically lunch money.
- Sure, if you’ve got a new ride or park under a forest, maybe it’s worth it. For me? I’d rather stash the difference in a rainy day fund.

I get it, though. That “what if” feeling is real. But sometimes you gotta weigh the odds and your wallet… and hope the universe isn’t feeling mischievous that day.

I get where you’re coming from, but I gotta say, after seeing a buddy’s ‘72 Chevelle get crushed by a falling branch, I started looking at comprehensive a little differently. I’m all about saving cash, but if you’ve got something you’d actually miss—or even just something rare—sometimes that extra coverage is worth the peace of mind. I mean, yeah, my old truck isn’t worth much on paper, but try finding another one in decent shape for what insurance would pay out... not so easy. Sometimes it’s not just about the bluebook value, you know?
