Finding affordable car insurance after 65 in kansas - anyone else struggling?
“I’ve never actually had an insurer physically check my odometer, but I’ve heard stories - usually secondhand - about companies asking for photos or service records if there’s a claim or a big change in reported mileage.”
That’s been my experience too. I always figured as long as I wasn’t fudging the numbers wildly, it’d be fine. Once, after a fender bender, they did ask for a photo of my dash, but nothing came of it. As for those telematics gadgets, my neighbor tried one and ended up with a higher rate because he drove late at night to pick up his grandkids. Didn’t seem worth the hassle to me. I’d rather pay a bit more than feel like someone’s watching every turn I make.
I just got my first policy last month and honestly, I was half-expecting someone to show up at my door with a clipboard, ready to quiz me about every mile I’ve ever driven. Turns out, they just took my word for it - no odometer photos, no detective work. I did get a weird email asking if I wanted to “save more” by plugging in one of those tracking things, but the idea of my insurance company knowing when I hit the drive-thru at 11pm is a little too Black Mirror for me.
My uncle tried the telematics thing and swore he’d never do it again. He’s a night owl, so apparently that made him “risky,” even though he’s basically driving empty roads. Makes you wonder who comes up with these rules. Anyway, I’m just hoping my rates don’t jump just because I like late-night ice cream runs...
That “save more” email cracks me up - like, sure, let me just hand over my driving habits so they can decide if I’m a menace for picking up milk at midnight. I get the whole telematics thing is supposed to reward “safe” drivers, but it’s a joke how they define safe. My neighbor got dinged for driving after 10pm too, and he’s probably the most careful driver I know. Meanwhile, I’ve seen people texting and weaving all over during rush hour, but as long as it’s daytime, that’s apparently fine?
I get why insurance companies want data, but honestly, it feels like they’re just looking for reasons to hike rates. If you’re not causing accidents or racking up tickets, your late-night snack runs shouldn’t matter. I’d rather pay a few extra bucks than have them tracking every turn I make. Privacy’s worth something.
You’re definitely not alone in thinking the telematics thing can be a bit much. It’s weird how “safe” just means “not driving late” or “not braking too hard” - like, life doesn’t always fit into those boxes. I get why privacy is a big deal for folks, especially if you’ve been driving for decades without issues. Out of curiosity, have you looked into companies that don’t use tracking at all? Some still offer decent rates, though it takes a bit of digging. The whole system isn’t perfect, that’s for sure.
Has anyone actually managed to get a decent quote without all the tracking nonsense? I tried calling around last month and it felt like every company wanted to stick a device in my car or have me download some app. I get the whole “safe driver” angle, but what about folks who just don’t want to be monitored? Is it even possible to get a fair rate anymore if you say no to telematics, or are we just stuck paying more?
