I get where you’re coming from, but honestly, those tracking apps are the only reason I haven’t been dropped yet. My record isn’t great (a couple fender benders and a speeding ticket last year), so the app actually gave me a shot at a discount I couldn’t get otherwise. It’s annoying, yeah, and half the time it dings me for “hard braking” when a deer jumps out, but it’s still cheaper than what I was paying before. Not perfect, but when you’re considered high-risk, you kinda have to take what you can get...

I hear you on the tracking apps being a pain, but honestly, if it’s saving you money, I’d probably do the same. I’ve got a couple of teenagers on my policy and the rates are already through the roof, so I get the whole “take what you can get” thing. The “hard braking” alerts drive me nuts too—like, what are you supposed to do, just hit the deer? Sometimes I wonder if these apps actually understand how people drive in rural Kansas. It’s not like we’re all out here drag racing.

Have you noticed if your rates actually go down after using the app for a while, or does it just keep you from getting dropped? I tried one of those things for a few months and it felt like every pothole or sudden stop was getting counted against me. Maybe I’m just too stubborn, but I ended up ditching it because it stressed me out more than it helped.

Still, if it’s working for you and keeping your insurance affordable, that’s something. It’s rough out there for anyone with a less-than-perfect record, especially once you hit a certain age. Feels like they’re just looking for any excuse to jack up the price. At least you found a way to make it work, even if it’s not ideal. Sometimes you just have to play their game, right?

Yeah, those apps can be a real mixed bag. I totally get what you mean about the “hard braking” thing—sometimes you just have to react fast, especially with wildlife or tractors popping out of nowhere. I’ve noticed my rate didn’t really drop much, but it did keep me from getting a hike after a minor fender bender last year. Do you think they actually factor in rural driving, or is it all just city algorithms? It’s frustrating when you’re doing your best and still feel penalized.

I’ve wondered about that too, honestly. I drive mostly backroads and highways out here, and it feels like those apps just don’t “get” rural life. Last winter, a deer jumped out and I had to slam the brakes—app flagged it as “aggressive.” Like, what else was I supposed to do? I’m not convinced they really factor in country driving. Sometimes it seems like they’re built for city stop-and-go, not dodging wildlife or farm equipment. Maybe there’s a setting I missed, but I haven’t found one yet...

Yeah, those apps can be a pain out here. They’re mostly designed for city traffic—lots of braking, but not for dodging deer or tractors. I’ve seen “hard braking” dings for stuff like that too. Have you checked if your app has a rural or highway mode? Some do, but it’s buried in the settings. If not, you might want to call your insurer and ask if they can review those flagged events. Sometimes they’ll adjust if you explain what happened, but honestly, it’s hit or miss. The tech just isn’t built for country life yet...
