Anyway, you’re giving solid advice—just toss that card in the glove box and forget about it until you need it. A little old school, but sometimes that’s what saves your bacon.

Funny thing, I had a client last winter who swore up and down he’d never need the paper card again. He was all about the app—until his phone froze up (literally, it was -10° and the battery just died) during a routine stop. Officer wouldn’t budge. He had coverage, but no proof, so he got a ticket anyway. It was a hassle to clear up, even though it was obvious he was insured.

- Paper cards might seem outdated, but Iowa law still wants to see them.
- Digital proof is great... until tech fails or you’re out of service range.
- Officers usually have to stick to the rules, even if they know you’re covered.

I get why it feels silly, but honestly, that little piece of paper can save you a lot of time and money. I wish the system was more flexible, but for now, glove box backup is the way to go.

Had a similar thing happen at a classic car show last year. Guy next to me had his insurance on his phone, all proud of how “paperless” he was—until he realized he’d left his phone in the trunk, and the battery was toast anyway. Officer doing random checks just shrugged and wrote him up. Took weeks to sort out, and he had to dig through email chains to prove he was covered.

Here’s my step-by-step: 1) Print two copies of your card. 2) One goes in the glove box, the other in your wallet or tucked behind the visor. 3) Forget about them until you need ‘em. Sounds old-fashioned, but when you’re standing in the cold trying to explain to an officer why your phone’s dead, you’ll wish you had that little slip of paper.

Tech is great... until it isn’t. Iowa hasn’t caught up yet, and honestly, I don’t see them changing soon. Just stash the card and save yourself the headache.

Been there, done that—except my “backup” was a crumpled card from three years ago. Officer didn’t find it nearly as funny as I did. I get the whole paperless thing, but Iowa’s still living in the glove box era. Honestly, I just keep a copy wedged behind my registration and hope for the best. Phones die, paper doesn’t (unless you spill coffee on it... ask me how I know).

Man, I totally get it. I’ve had my “current” insurance card turn out to be expired when I actually needed it—turns out, digging through a pile of old receipts and napkins in the glove box doesn’t impress anyone in uniform. I’m with you on the paper backup, though. Phones are great until they’re not, and Iowa winters aren’t exactly kind to electronics. Still, I wish there was a better system... feels like we’re stuck between two worlds.
