Getting caught without car insurance in Iowa is no joke

Yeah, I’m with you on the backup plan. I’ve had my phone die right as I was getting pulled over once—talk about timing. The cop wasn’t thrilled when I couldn’t pull up my insurance app, and honestly, I was sweating bullets. Luckily, I found an old paper card in the glove box (it was expired, but at least it showed I had coverage at some point). He let me off with a warning, but it could’ve gone way worse.

I do think screenshots are smart, but sometimes even that’s not enough if your phone’s totally dead or you left it at home. Paper copies might seem old school, but they’re reliable when tech fails. One thing I started doing after that scare: I keep a photo of my insurance card on my keychain fob—tiny printout, laminated with tape. It’s not pretty, but it works if everything else goes sideways.

Honestly, Iowa doesn’t mess around with this stuff. My cousin got hit with a fine and had to deal with SR-22 paperwork for months after forgetting his proof during a routine stop. It’s a pain to get back on track once you’re flagged as high-risk.

I get why people want to go digital-only—less clutter—but the risk just isn’t worth it for me anymore. Maybe it’s just paranoia from past mistakes, but doubling up feels safer than trusting one thing to work every time.

That keychain fob idea is genius—never thought of that. I’ve definitely had the “dead phone, no proof” panic before, and it’s not fun. Do you ever worry about the info being too small to read, though? I tried printing mine once and it looked like ant handwriting. Still, better than nothing, right? Iowa really doesn’t play around... I’d rather look a little old school than deal with SR-22 headaches.

I tried the mini printout once, too—honestly, I could barely read it myself. Ended up taping a regular-sized copy in my glove box just in case. Not the sleekest solution, but at least it’s legible. Iowa’s fines are no joke, and SR-22 is a pain to deal with. I’d rather carry a little extra paper than risk it. Funny how something so simple can cause so much stress...

Honestly, that’s the smart move. Iowa doesn’t mess around with those fines, and dealing with SR-22 is just a headache you don’t want. I’ve seen folks try to save space with those tiny cards, but if an officer can’t read it, it’s not worth the risk. A regular printout might not look slick, but it saves you money and hassle in the long run. Sometimes practical wins over pretty.

I get the whole “just print it out” thing, but honestly, I just keep a digital copy on my phone. Less to lose, less to forget. Never had an officer give me grief about it—maybe I’ve just been lucky? Carrying extra paper feels old school to me. If your phone’s charged, you’re good. Just my two cents...
