Maybe I’m just jinxed, but it’s like the universe knows when you try to get clever with insurance.

- I get the urge to save, but for me, it’s not worth the stress.
- Accidents always seem to happen at the worst possible times.
- With kids in the car, I’d rather pay a bit more each month than scramble for a big deductible later.
- Peace of mind isn’t cheap, but neither is an unexpected repair bill...

I get where you’re coming from—lowering the deductible looks good on paper, but it’s a gamble. I’ve seen folks save $20 a month, then get hit with a $1,000 bill they weren’t ready for. If you’ve got kids and a busy life, that extra peace of mind can be worth the higher premium. On the other hand, if you’ve got a solid emergency fund and rarely make claims, a higher deductible might make sense. It really depends on your risk tolerance and how much buffer you’ve got for surprises.

I’ve wrestled with this exact question, especially since I’m on the road a lot—sometimes hundreds of miles from home. I get the appeal of saving a few bucks each month, but I’ve learned the hard way that a higher deductible can really sting if you’re not ready for it. A couple years back, I bumped into a deer on a backroad in Montana. The repairs were just over my deductible, and honestly, writing that check was rough. At the time, I’d chosen the higher deductible to save money for gas and gear, but in hindsight, I wish I’d paid a bit more each month for less stress when things went sideways.

That said, if you’re someone who rarely files claims and has a decent cushion set aside, it’s not a terrible strategy. The math can work out in your favor over time—assuming you don’t have bad luck with accidents or breakdowns. But life’s unpredictable, especially if you’re hauling kids or pets around or taking long trips where help isn’t always nearby.

One thing that helped me decide was looking at my past claims history and being honest about how much risk I could handle without losing sleep. If you’re comfortable with the idea of shelling out more in an emergency—and you’ve got that emergency fund ready—then sure, go for the higher deductible. Otherwise, peace of mind is worth something too... especially when you’re far from home and things go wrong at the worst possible moment.

It’s definitely not one-size-fits-all. For me these days, I lean toward a lower deductible just because it makes those unexpected moments on the road less stressful. But everyone’s situation is different—just gotta weigh what matters most to you and your family.

That story about hitting a deer really hits home—those unexpected moments can be brutal. You mentioned,

“One thing that helped me decide was looking at my past claims history and being honest about how much risk I could handle without losing sleep.”
That’s honestly the key. Out of curiosity, did you ever look into how much the premium difference actually saved you over time compared to what you paid out of pocket? Sometimes the numbers are closer than folks expect, especially if you go a few years claim-free. Just wondering if it felt worth it in hindsight, or if the peace of mind now outweighs any savings you had before.

I totally get where you’re coming from. I ran the numbers a couple years back after going claim-free for ages, and honestly, the savings from a higher deductible added up way faster than I expected. But yeah, there’s always that nagging “what if” in the back of your mind. For me, knowing I had a little cushion set aside made the risk feel manageable. Peace of mind is great, but sometimes the math just makes too much sense to ignore.
