I get where you’re coming from—those “surprise” expenses are the worst. I’ve tried the higher deductible route before, thinking I’d save a chunk each month, but then I started driving like I was made of glass. Not exactly relaxing. The one time I actually needed to file a claim, that big deductible stung way more than the premium ever did.

But on the flip side, if you’ve got a solid emergency fund and don’t mind rolling the dice a bit, it can make sense. For me, though, I’d rather pay a little extra for that peace of mind. My luck’s about as good as yours—raise the deductible and suddenly every curb is out to get me.

Coffee’s non-negotiable, though. If it comes down to caffeine or coverage, I’ll just have to find savings somewhere else... maybe finally cancel that gym membership I never use.

I hear you on the peace of mind factor. I tried bumping up my deductible last year, thinking it’d be a smart move, but every time I parked in a crowded lot, I got nervous. Ended up switching back after a minor fender bender—paying that deductible hurt way more than the monthly difference ever did. If you’re not someone who can just shrug off those “what ifs,” sometimes it’s worth paying a bit more upfront. Coffee, though... yeah, that’s staying in the budget no matter what.

That hits home. I tried the higher deductible route too, thinking I’d just “drive extra careful.” But then someone dinged my door at the grocery store and vanished. Suddenly, that savings didn’t feel worth it. I guess for me, knowing I won’t get walloped by a big bill is worth the extra few bucks each month. And yeah, coffee’s non-negotiable—priorities, right?

I totally get where you’re coming from. I tried the higher deductible thing a while back, thinking I’d just be extra cautious with my S-Class. But it’s wild how much is out of your control—door dings, runaway shopping carts, even a random hailstorm once. The peace of mind knowing I won’t get slammed with a massive bill if something happens is worth the extra monthly cost for me.

Do you ever worry about the little stuff adding up? Like, even minor repairs can be crazy expensive on some cars. I’ve had friends who thought they’d never need to file a claim, then got hit with something totally random. Makes me wonder if the small monthly savings are really worth the risk in the long run... especially when you factor in how unpredictable other drivers can be.

Curious—did you notice your rates go up after that fender bender, or did switching deductibles help balance it out?

Man, I hear you on the “stuff just happens” front. I drive a minivan that’s seen more action in the school parking lot than a demolition derby. I tried the higher deductible route once, thinking, “Hey, how much trouble can a family hauler get into?” Turns out, a lot. My kid’s soccer ball took out a side mirror, and then a neighbor’s kid decided to “help” wash the car with a rock. That $1,000 deductible suddenly felt like a bad joke.

Honestly, I thought I’d save a bunch, but between the random dings and my own clumsy moments (don’t ask about the garage door incident), it just wasn’t worth the stress. I’d rather pay a bit more each month and not have to panic every time I hear a weird noise in the driveway.

Funny thing—my rates did go up after a fender bender, but not as much as I expected. The deductible switch didn’t really balance it out, though. It just made me more paranoid about every little scratch. I guess with some cars, especially the fancy ones, even a tiny repair can cost more than my monthly grocery bill. Makes me wonder if anyone’s actually come out ahead with the high deductible thing, or if it’s just wishful thinking.

Ever had one of those moments where you debate filing a claim for something small, just because you know the repair bill’s gonna sting? Or do you just live with the battle scars and call it “character”?
