Would you risk a higher deductible to lower your insurance bill?

Honestly, I get where you’re coming from. We upped our deductible last year too, mostly because we’d rather spend the extra cash on road trip snacks than insurance. But I do keep a mental tally of every close call in parking lots... makes me wonder if I’m tempting fate. Still, as long as you’re not driving through hailstorms for fun, it seems like a decent trade-off.

Yeah, I get the appeal—extra cash in your pocket is hard to argue with. Here’s how I look at it: first, check your emergency fund. If you’ve got enough stashed to cover that higher deductible, it’s less stressful. Next, think about your driving habits. My partner’s a magnet for runaway shopping carts, so we kept ours lower... but if you’re mostly highway and careful, it might be worth the risk. Just don’t forget to factor in those “what if” moments—sometimes peace of mind is worth a few less snacks.

I get where you’re coming from, but I actually went the other way after a fender bender a couple years back. Even with a solid emergency fund, it stung having to cough up a big chunk all at once. The savings on the premium weren’t huge for me, so I switched back to a lower deductible. Maybe it’s just my luck, but those “what if” moments seem to happen more often than I’d like...

I totally get that. For me, it’s all about the math—if the premium savings aren’t at least a couple hundred bucks a year, I just can’t justify the risk. I’d rather pay a bit more each month than get hit with a surprise bill that ruins my weekend plans. Guess I’m not much of a gambler when it comes to car repairs…

I hear you—those savings can look good on paper, but unless it’s a big difference, it’s tough to justify bumping up the deductible. I’ve seen folks save $150 a year, then get hit with a $1,000 bill after a minor fender bender... not fun. Ever run the numbers on how often you’ve actually needed to file a claim? Sometimes just looking at your own history helps put the risk in perspective.
