Would you risk a higher deductible to lower your insurance bill?

Tried the high deductible route once, thinking I was being clever. Two months later, a rogue shopping cart introduced itself to my car door. Ended up paying way more out of pocket than what I saved. Maybe if you’re super lucky (or never leave your driveway), it works out, but I’m not rolling those dice again. Sometimes “cheap” just bites back harder.

I get where you’re coming from. The “high deductible gamble” always sounds good on paper, but reality tends to have other plans. I tried it once, too—figured my ‘72 Chevelle wasn’t exactly a daily driver, so how much risk could there be? Turns out, even parked classics aren’t immune to mishaps. Some kid’s bike handlebar left a lovely scratch down the side, and suddenly my “savings” vanished.

I suppose if you’ve got nerves of steel and a backup fund, it might be worth it. But for most folks, especially with anything rare or sentimental, the peace of mind with a lower deductible is hard to beat. Insurance companies know the math better than we do, and they’re rarely the ones left holding the bag when luck runs out. Sometimes paying a bit more upfront just makes life simpler.

That really sums it up. I’ve tried to “game the system” myself by bumping up the deductible, thinking I’d pocket the difference. But one fender-bender later, all those savings just disappeared. It’s easy to underestimate how fast those costs add up, especially with older cars or anything you actually care about. There’s something to be said for not stressing every time you park somewhere new. Sometimes peace of mind is worth a few extra bucks a month, even if it feels like you’re playing it safe.

- Totally get where you’re coming from.
- I’ve done the math on higher deductibles, too, and it *looks* good on paper… until you actually need to file a claim.
- One time, a rogue shopping cart left a nice dent in my door—suddenly that “savings” vanished.
- For me, not stressing every time I park at the grocery store is worth a few extra bucks.
- Maybe if I drove a beater I didn’t care about, I’d risk it... but with my luck? Nope.

That “savings vanished” moment hits hard. I’ve run those numbers too, and yeah, it’s tempting to go for a higher deductible since the premium drop looks nice at first. But as someone still getting comfortable behind the wheel, I just can’t see myself taking that risk. Even a minor fender bender could wipe out a year’s worth of savings, and then some.

I get that for some people, especially if their car isn’t worth much, it might make sense to gamble a bit. But for me, I’d rather pay a little more each month and have peace of mind. The stress of thinking “what if” every time I park or drive in a crowded lot isn’t worth it. Maybe down the road, when I’ve got more experience (and maybe a few less parking lot incidents under my belt), I’ll rethink it... but right now, I’m sticking with the lower deductible.
