Why is figuring out how much car insurance you ACTUALLY need so confusing?

Honestly, I get why it feels shady, but I don’t think it’s always intentional. Insurance just has a ton of moving parts—liability, comprehensive, collision, then all those extras like rental or roadside. “Full coverage” is kind of a misnomer; it’s really just the basics plus collision and comp. I’ve had to dig into the fine print myself, especially with pricier cars... It’s annoying, but not always some big conspiracy. Just a lot of jargon and upselling.

Honestly, I still think they could make it way clearer if they wanted to. I mean, when I bought our minivan, the agent rattled off so many options my head was spinning. It’s not always a conspiracy, but it sure feels like they want you confused enough to just say yes to everything. My “full coverage” ended up missing glass repair... go figure. If it’s not shady, it’s at least super convenient for them.

Yeah, I totally get that vibe. When I was shopping around, I asked about “comprehensive” and thought it meant everything was covered. Turns out, I had to add roadside and rental separately—felt like buying toppings at a pizza place. The agent was nice enough, but the way it’s all split up makes it way too easy to miss stuff you’d assume is included. I guess they bank on us not reading the fine print...

Honestly, I’ve had my car for years and I *still* second-guess what’s actually included in my policy. Why do they make “comprehensive” sound like it’s everything, when really it’s just a piece of the puzzle? Makes me wonder if it’s intentional confusion or just bad marketing... Either way, you’re not alone—reading the fine print feels like a full-time job sometimes.

Yeah, that bugs me too. I always thought “comprehensive” meant I was totally covered, but then I found out it doesn’t include collision. Ever tried to get a straight answer from an agent about what’s actually covered for older cars? Feels like they dance around it. Do you think it’s worth paying extra for stuff like roadside assistance, or is that just another add-on most of us don’t really need?
