Someone smashed my parked car—deal with insurance or call the cops?

Yeah, I’m with you—video seems easier, but insurance folks love their high-res photos. Had this happen to me last year and the adjuster literally zoomed in on a scratch I didn’t even notice. Video just doesn’t catch those tiny things, especially if your hand shakes or you move too fast. It’s annoying, but snapping a bunch of pics up close saved me from a headache later when they tried to say the dent was “pre-existing.”

Photos saved my butt too. Last winter, someone scraped my minivan in the grocery lot and just left. Insurance tried to say the rust spot was old, but I had a close-up from a week before—no mark, no rust. They backed off quick. I get why people like video, but honestly, who’s got time to scrub through shaky footage? Has anyone actually had luck with dashcam footage for parked hits, or is it just hype?

Dashcams are a mixed bag for parked hits, honestly. I tried one after my third “mystery dent” in a year (don’t ask), thinking it’d be my secret weapon. Here’s the thing: unless you’ve got one of those fancy models with parking mode and a battery that lasts longer than my patience at the DMV, you’re probably just recording your dashboard while you shop. Mine caught a grand total of… me eating fries before work.

If you do go the dashcam route, step one is making sure it actually records when the car’s off. Step two: hope the angle covers more than your windshield wipers. Step three: pray the culprit doesn’t park just out of frame, which happened to me—twice.

Photos are way less hassle. Snap a few every week or after you park somewhere sketchy. Insurance can’t argue with timestamps. Dashcams sound cool, but unless you’re super diligent (or paranoid), they’re not always worth the hype for parked stuff.

There’s definitely some truth to dashcams being more hype than help for parked incidents, unless you’re ready to shell out for the higher-end models. I tried a mid-range one thinking it’d catch everything, but it only ran about 20 minutes after I parked. Not exactly helpful during an eight-hour shift. Those hardwire kits that let the camera run off your car’s battery can drain it if you’re not careful, too.

Honestly, for insurance, photos are your best friend—especially if you document the damage as soon as you find it. If there’s substantial damage or you suspect a hit-and-run, filing a police report is a good call. Most insurers will want that report anyway for claims involving an unknown driver. It’s a hassle, but it covers you if things get complicated later.

I still use a dashcam, but mainly for driving. For parked stuff? I just rely on photos and a bit of luck. It’s not perfect, but it beats coming back to a dent and zero evidence...

Couldn’t agree more with this. Photos are gold for insurance claims, especially if there’s no dashcam footage. I’ve seen way too many folks show up with just a vague description and hope the adjuster takes their word for it… not ideal. The police report thing is a pain, but yeah, most insurers want that paper trail if it’s a hit-and-run.

I do think dashcams have their place, but the parked mode stuff is tricky. Those battery drain worries are real, and not everyone wants to mess with hardwiring. I tried one of those “motion detection” cams once—thing kept turning on every time a leaf blew by, so my SD card was full of squirrels and wind gusts. Not helpful.

At the end of the day, luck does play into it. But having clear pics and a report makes life so much easier if you need to file a claim or argue your case later. It’s not perfect, but it definitely beats nothing...
