Totally get where you’re coming from. Roadside assistance can feel like a “why bother?” until you’re stranded in the rain, right? I do wonder, though—have you ever looked at the cost of glass repairs lately? Sometimes even a basic windshield crack can run higher than expected. But yeah, if your car’s older and you’re comfortable with the risk, skipping some extras makes sense. It’s all about what keeps you sleeping easy at night.

I hear you on the glass repair thing—my last windshield chip turned into a crack overnight and the quote I got was way more than I expected. Ended up hunting for a used one at a junkyard, which was a whole adventure by itself. Still, I get why some folks just skip the extra coverage if their car isn’t worth much anymore. There’s a point where you’re basically self-insuring because the premiums and deductibles start to feel like a bad deal.

Roadside, though... yeah, I’m not proud to admit I’ve been that person stuck in a parking lot with a dead battery, wishing I’d just paid the extra $5 a month. Funny how you only appreciate it when you really need it. Delaware insurance is already enough of a circus without all the add-ons, but sometimes the peace of mind is worth it—even if it feels like you’re paying for “just in case.”

That whole “self-insuring” thing is exactly where my brain goes every time I look at the optional coverage. I mean, I get it—if your car’s not worth much, why pay for glass or comprehensive? But then I read stuff like:

“yeah, I’m not proud to admit I’ve been that person stuck in a parking lot with a dead battery, wishing I’d just paid the extra $5 a month.”

and I start second-guessing myself. My old Corolla isn’t exactly a showpiece, but I do drive it into Wilmington a couple times a week, and the idea of being stranded somewhere is... not great. Still, every time I try to build a policy online, the price just creeps up with every little add-on. It’s like playing insurance Jenga—pull one block and hope the whole thing doesn’t fall apart.

I actually called around to a couple local agents last week (which, by the way, is way more awkward than I expected—why do they always sound slightly disappointed when you ask about bare-bones coverage?). One of them straight up told me roadside assistance is usually cheaper through my cell provider or AAA than tacking it onto the policy, which was news to me. I checked and my phone plan actually has some kind of roadside deal for like $3/month. Not sure how good it is, but at least it’s an option.

The glass thing, though... I had a chip last winter and tried the DIY kit from AutoZone. Let’s just say it didn’t look any better after I “fixed” it. Ended up ignoring it until the crack spread and then just lived with it. Not ideal, but the quotes were nuts for a car that’s barely worth $2k.

Honestly, Delaware insurance is wild. The fees, the minimums, the weird state-specific stuff—I’m still not sure if I’m missing something important or just being paranoid. But yeah, sometimes peace of mind costs less than you think, and sometimes it feels like you’re paying for nothing. Guess it’s all about picking your battles... and hoping your battery holds out.

- I get where you’re coming from, but I have to push back a bit on skipping coverage just because the car’s not worth much.
- Had a friend with a 10-year-old BMW—nothing fancy, but a rock cracked his windshield and the replacement was almost $900 because of the sensors. He was glad he had glass coverage, even though the car wasn’t worth a ton anymore.
- Roadside through your phone plan is a cool hack, but double-check the fine print. Some of those “included” services cap out at like $50 per tow or only cover a few calls a year. Not a huge deal for a Corolla, but if you ever upgrade, it could matter.
- I know the costs add up, but sometimes those little add-ons save you a headache when you least expect it. I’d rather pay for peace of mind than get caught out with a dead battery in the rain.
- Delaware insurance is definitely weird, but sometimes the “extras” aren’t as optional as they seem—especially if you drive into the city a lot. Just my two cents.

Honestly, I’m with you on not wanting to get caught out in the rain with a dead battery. Sometimes those “extras” really are lifesavers.

Had a similar situation myself last winter and was so glad I didn’t skimp on coverage. It’s easy to think you’re overpaying until something actually happens. Delaware insurance rules are a pain, but I’d rather be overprepared than stuck on the side of 95, you know?
