Why does picking a deductible feel like a weird gamble?

Yeah, I get where you’re coming from. I’ve had a couple of close calls on long trips, and honestly, the peace of mind with a lower deductible is worth it for me too. It’s wild how one random fender bender can wipe out any “savings” from a higher deductible. I’d rather just budget for the extra monthly cost and not stress if something happens on the road.

I keep going back and forth on this exact thing.

— I totally get that, but then I look at the monthly cost and start second-guessing myself. But honestly, even just thinking about having to cough up a big chunk of cash after an accident makes me anxious. It’s like, sure, you save a bit month to month, but one bad day and it’s all gone. I’d rather play it safe and pay a little more now than risk a huge bill later. Maybe I’m just too cautious, but that’s where I land.

It really does feel like a gamble, doesn’t it? I’ve run the numbers a few times and even though the higher deductible saves me maybe $20 a month, the idea of suddenly needing to come up with $1,000 or more just stresses me out. I guess it comes down to how likely you think you are to actually need to file a claim. Has anyone ever regretted going with a higher deductible after an accident, or does it usually work out in the long run?

Honestly, same here. I keep thinking, what if I get into a fender bender right after switching to a higher deductible? But then again, is it just me or do the savings never feel worth the risk unless you go years without a claim? Has anyone actually had to pay that big deductible and regretted it, or is it just one of those things you worry about but rarely happens?

Yeah, picking a deductible feels like betting against yourself, right? I once went with a $1,500 deductible to save a few bucks a month... and of course, my car got rear-ended three months later. That bill hurt way more than the premium ever did. Sometimes it’s just Murphy’s Law in action.
