"Turns out it wasn't enough to justify the stress of potentially shelling out more if something happened."

Yeah, that's exactly it. People often underestimate how quickly those little scrapes and dings add up, especially if you're driving something you genuinely care about. I learned this the hard way with my '68 Mustang—thought I'd save a few bucks by upping the deductible, but one careless driver backing into me at a car show later, and I was kicking myself. Classic cars or daily drivers, doesn't matter; you can't control other people's carelessness.

Honestly, the peace of mind from a lower deductible is worth more than the small monthly savings. If you're regularly parking in tight spots or busy areas, it's almost guaranteed you'll eventually need to file a claim. I'd rather pay a bit more each month than stress every time I park downtown or at a crowded event. Just my two cents...

I get your point, but personally, I'd argue that a lower deductible isn't always the best move. Sure, it can save headaches for minor stuff, but if you're a careful driver with a solid emergency fund, carrying a higher deductible might actually make more sense financially.

True for some folks...but if you rarely file claims and have savings stashed away, paying extra each month might not be worth it. Just something to consider before automatically going low-deductible.

I used to always go for the lowest deductible possible, thinking it was the safest bet. But after years of paying premiums without ever filing a claim, I started questioning if I was just throwing money away. A few years back, when I got my '68 Mustang insured, I decided to bump up the deductible quite a bit. Figured I'm careful enough and have some cash set aside, so why not save on premiums?

Honestly, it worked out pretty well. Knock on wood, I've never had to file a claim yet, and the savings each year have added up nicely—enough to cover minor repairs or upgrades without even touching my insurance. Sure, there's always that "what if" scenario lurking in the back of my mind...but realistically, if something major happens, I've got the emergency fund to handle it.

I get that peace of mind matters, especially if you're nervous about unexpected expenses. But for me, I'd rather keep more cash in my pocket each month and take my chances. Just my two cents from personal experience.

I hear ya, and honestly, you're not wrong. I've been in insurance for years, and I always chuckle when people insist on the lowest deductible possible. Reminds me of my buddy Dave—he was paying sky-high premiums for years on his truck, convinced he'd need it someday. Well, "someday" never came, and he finally bumped up his deductible. Saved enough cash over a couple years to buy himself some sweet new tires and rims without even touching his insurance.

But here's the thing—it's all about your comfort level. If you're the type who loses sleep worrying about that "what if," then maybe paying a bit more each month is worth it for peace of mind. But if you're like Dave (or you, apparently), and you've got a decent emergency fund stashed away, then yeah, higher deductibles usually make sense.

Just don't go too crazy with it. Had another friend who set his deductible super high to save money...then backed into a pole two weeks later. Ouch. Murphy's law, right?

Yeah, but what if you're someone like me who's had a few too many close calls? Saving on premiums sounds great...until you're staring at a hefty repair bill. Isn't the lower deductible safer for us accident-prone folks?
