- Totally get where you’re coming from. I’ve always leaned toward higher deductibles too—just makes sense if you’re watching every penny.
- For me, I look at my emergency fund. If I can cover the deductible without sweating it, I’m good with the risk.
- One thing I do is check rates every year. Sometimes the difference in premium isn’t as big as you’d think, especially if you haven’t had claims.
- I do worry about that “what if” moment, but honestly, I’d rather have the lower monthly bill and just be careful on the road.
- Guess it’s all about what helps you sleep at night... for me, that’s keeping more cash in my pocket.

Honestly, I get wanting to keep more cash in your pocket each month, but I’ve been burned before with a high deductible. Had a fender bender last winter—nothing major, but paying that big chunk all at once kind of stung. I thought my emergency fund was solid, but then life threw a couple other curveballs at me the same month. Now I’m leaning toward a middle ground. Maybe it’s just bad luck, but sometimes peace of mind is worth a few extra bucks a month, you know?

I totally get where you’re coming from. A few years back, I went with the lowest premium and highest deductible, thinking I’d never need it. Then my car got sideswiped in a parking lot, and suddenly I was out a grand just to get it drivable again. It made me rethink the whole “save now, pay later” thing. Honestly, I’d rather pay a bit more each month and not have to scramble if something goes sideways. Peace of mind isn’t cheap, but neither is stress.

That’s a solid point. Here’s how I usually break it down:

- If you’ve got enough in savings to cover a high deductible without sweating it, the lower premium can make sense.
- But if an unexpected $1k bill would really sting, a lower deductible might be worth the extra monthly cost.
- Also, think about your driving habits—are you on the road a lot or mostly parked at home?

Curious—do you factor in how often you’ve actually filed claims in the past, or is it more about what feels comfortable right now?

You’re spot on about weighing savings versus peace of mind. I actually do look at my claim history—over the years, I’ve barely filed any, so I lean toward a higher deductible. But I get why some folks just want to avoid surprises, especially if they drive daily or have a car that’s expensive to fix. For my old Mustang, though, I’d rather pay less each month and take my chances, since it’s mostly in the garage anyway. Everyone’s risk tolerance is just a little different...
