figure out what you could realistically afford to pay if something happened tomorrow—like, would a $1,000 deductible wipe you out?

Man, I hear you. Last year my minivan got sideswiped in the grocery store lot—wasn’t even my fault, but there I was, staring at a $750 deductible. Felt like paying for a surprise field trip nobody wanted. Has anyone ever actually gone with those super high deductibles to save cash? Did it end up biting you later, or did you come out ahead?

I’ve always leaned toward a higher deductible to keep my premiums down, but I’ll admit it’s a bit of a gamble. For my daily driver, I set it at $1,000, figuring I could scrape that together if something went sideways. But when my old ‘72 Chevelle needed a windshield after a hailstorm, that deductible stung more than I expected. The savings on premiums over the years did add up, though—not sure it balanced out perfectly, but it felt better than overpaying every month.

One thing I’ve noticed: if you’re not prone to accidents or claims, the higher deductible can make sense. But if you’re driving in busy areas or parking in lots where people treat bumpers like shopping cart stoppers, it might not be worth the risk. It really comes down to your comfort level and whether you’ve got a rainy day fund set aside. Personally, I’d rather risk the occasional big bill than pay extra every single month... but I know that’s not for everyone.

I get where you’re coming from, but honestly, I’ve been burned too many times with the high deductible route. I drive in city traffic every day and it’s like a magnet for fender benders and random scrapes. Last year, I had two claims back to back—one wasn’t even my fault—and that $1,000 hit twice in six months just about wiped out any savings I’d made on premiums. For me, peace of mind is worth the extra monthly cost. Maybe if my luck ever changes, I’ll reconsider... but right now, lower deductible all the way.

That’s totally fair, especially with city driving—those little dings add up fast. I used to think a high deductible was the way to go, but after a run-in with a delivery van (not my fault either), I realized the “savings” didn’t feel worth it when I had to cough up a grand on the spot. For folks who deal with constant traffic and tight parking, paying a bit more each month just feels safer. Maybe if you’re out in the suburbs or barely drive, it’s different... but city life is its own beast.

Totally get where you’re coming from. Here’s how I’ve been thinking about it lately:

- High deductible = lower monthly payment, but that “ouch” moment when you actually need to use it is real. I had a $1,500 deductible for a while and just kept crossing my fingers nothing would happen. Spoiler: something did.
- City driving is just a different animal. Tight spots, random scrapes, people opening doors into your car... it’s like playing bumper cars sometimes. I swear, even if you’re careful, stuff just happens.
- Suburbs or rural areas? Maybe you can get away with the higher deductible since there’s less risk. But in the city, it feels like you’re rolling the dice every time you park on the street.
- One thing I wonder: does anyone actually save enough on premiums to make up for the risk? Like, if you go three years without a claim, maybe it works out... but if you have even one incident, all those “savings” are gone in a flash.
- I’ve started looking at it like a subscription for peace of mind. Yeah, I pay more each month now, but at least I’m not sweating every time someone parks too close or a delivery truck squeezes by.

Not saying there’s one right answer—guess it depends on your luck and how much risk you’re cool with. For me, after paying out of pocket once, I’m leaning toward the lower deductible even if it stings a bit more each month. Just feels less stressful overall.
