Letting teens borrow your car: add them to insurance or just trust the policy?

My kid just got their license and now the big question—do I officially add them to my car insurance, or just let them drive under that “permissive use” thing? I’ve heard both are technically covered, but adding them bumps up the premium a lot. On the other hand, I’m kinda worried about loopholes or claims being denied if something goes wrong. Anyone have experience with either route? Which do you think is safer (or cheaper) in the long run?

Had to add my nephew a couple years back—he was driving my car more than just “the odd favor.” That

“wallet pain”

is no joke. The premium hike was rough, but at least there were no surprises if something happened. Not worth risking it, honestly.
