Interesting to hear your friend's camper van experience because mine was kinda different. A couple of years back, I had a pretty nasty scrape with my Audi—totally my fault, backed it straight into a concrete pillar in a tight parking garage. I was dreading the insurance call, figuring they'd give me the runaround or jack up my rates.

Surprisingly, it wasn't nearly as painful as I expected. I took loads of photos right there, got a couple quotes within a week, and submitted everything online with a detailed explanation. I didn't push or threaten legal action or anything like that—just stayed calm, clear, and polite. The adjuster got back to me fairly quickly, and after a bit of back-and-forth (nothing major), they ended up covering almost exactly what the higher repair quote was. I was honestly pretty shocked at how smoothly it all went.

But here's the thing: I think insurers might handle different types of claims differently. Like your buddy's camper van—maybe because it's a specialty vehicle or because he was traveling, they figured he'd be less likely to push back? My claim was straightforward bodywork on a common luxury model, so maybe they knew exactly what to expect and didn't see any reason to drag it out? Or maybe it really depends on the adjuster you happen to get and their workload or mood that day...

I do agree insurers probably count on people giving up early—especially with more complicated claims. But I've found that being clear, organized, and firm (without making threats) has usually worked out fine for me. Maybe confrontation has its place, but I haven't needed it yet.

Had a similar experience with my BMW last year—minor fender bender, totally my fault. I dreaded the insurance hassle too, but honestly, it wasn't bad at all. I think you're onto something about specialty vehicles though. My brother had a claim on his food truck (commercial policy), and they dragged their feet forever. Seems like insurers get cautious when it's not a straightforward fix or common vehicle...

Yeah, specialty vehicles definitely complicate things. Regular cars like your BMW usually have standardized parts and repair processes, so insurers can quickly estimate costs and approve claims. But commercial vehicles—especially customized ones like food trucks—are a whole different beast. Insurers get cautious because repairs aren't straightforward, and replacement parts or specialized labor can be pricey and hard to source. I'd recommend documenting everything meticulously and maybe even getting an independent appraisal if things start dragging out... better safe than sorry.

Totally agree with documenting everything carefully. I've heard insurers can get picky about details, especially with custom setups. Also, might be worth checking if your policy covers downtime or lost income during repairs—could save you some headaches later on.
