I've been helping my younger brother sort out his first car insurance policy, and we got stuck on the whole comprehensive coverage thing. At first, he was like "nah, I don't need that," because his car isn't exactly a shiny new Tesla or anything—it's more like a gently used (okay, heavily loved) Honda Civic. But then I reminded him about stuff like theft, vandalism, or even random tree branches deciding to take a nap on your windshield during a storm.
Anyway, here's the tip I gave him: if your car's value is pretty low—like under $3k or so—it might not be worth paying extra for comprehensive coverage. You could end up paying more in premiums than you'd ever get back if something happened. But if your ride is newer or you live somewhere sketchy (or just have really bad luck with trees), it might be worth it.
Curious how other folks decide whether to go comprehensive or skip it...any rules of thumb or personal experiences?
