DOES YOUR RIDE NEED EXTRA PROTECTION AT CAR SHOWS?

I get the whole “layered security” thing, but sometimes I wonder if it’s just overkill—especially at car shows where there are usually people everywhere and some security already. Has anyone actually had their car messed with at a show? Or is it more about peace of mind than real risk?

I’ve seen those steering wheel locks and pedal clamps, and honestly, they look like a pain to use. I tried one once and spent more time fiddling with it than anything else. GPS trackers seem kind of cool, but I’d probably be the person who hides it too well and then can’t find it later. I guess if your car is super rare or flashy, it might be worth it, but for most of us, is it really necessary?

Also, does all this extra security ever actually stop someone who’s determined? Or does it just slow them down a bit? I feel like if someone really wants your car, they’ll find a way, gadgets or not. Maybe the real trick is just not drawing too much attention and parking where there’s a lot of foot traffic. But then again, I’ve heard stories about people getting stuff swiped even in busy places.

Curious if anyone’s had a close call or learned the hard way. Or maybe I’m just being paranoid and should just focus on enjoying the show instead of stressing about every possible scenario...

Honestly, I think it’s worth putting in a little extra effort, even if your car isn’t a showstopper. I drive a pretty standard family SUV and once had someone swipe the dash cam right out of it at a busy event—broad daylight, tons of people around. Security at shows is usually focused on the cars themselves, but smaller stuff goes missing all the time. Steering locks and trackers might feel like overkill, but even basic visible deterrents can make a difference. If it slows someone down or makes them think twice, that’s already a win in my book. Peace of mind isn’t nothing either... sometimes it’s just nice not worrying while you’re actually trying to enjoy yourself.

That’s a really good point about the “smaller stuff” going missing. I’ve had my share of close calls, even with a car that tends to draw a crowd. You’d think people would be more cautious around something flashy, but honestly, it just attracts a different kind of attention. I remember one time at a regional show—my coupe was parked right up front, and while everyone was busy gawking at the paintwork, someone tried to pry off the custom valve caps. Not exactly high-value, but it’s the principle, you know? It’s weirdly personal when someone messes with your car, no matter what you drive.

I used to think steering locks were just for older cars or maybe overkill for newer models with all their built-in security. But after hearing stories like yours (and living through a couple myself), I started using one anyway. It’s not about thinking your car is some big target—it’s just about making it less convenient for someone looking for an easy score. Even something as simple as tossing a jacket over valuables or locking up the glovebox can make a difference.

Peace of mind is huge. There’s enough to worry about at these events—weather, parking dings, random folks leaning on your fenders for selfies... The last thing you want is to spend the whole day glancing over your shoulder or wondering if your dash cam will still be there when you get back.

I get that some people might feel silly putting extra locks on a daily driver or a family SUV, but honestly? If it helps you relax and enjoy the show, that’s worth way more than any gadget or accessory. Doesn’t matter if your ride is rare or just reliable—everyone deserves to feel secure showing up and showing off.

That hits home. I’ve always wondered—does having a luxury badge make you more of a target, or is it just the “different” factor that draws people in? I mean, I’ve had folks try to peek inside my S-Class at shows, but never anything actually stolen (knock on wood). Do you think visible security stuff like steering locks actually deters people, or does it just signal there’s something worth protecting? Sometimes I worry the extra measures might attract more curiosity than they prevent...

I get what you mean about visible security maybe drawing more eyes. Had my WRX at a meet once—used a big yellow steering lock, and honestly, people seemed more interested in the lock than the car. Still, I'd rather deal with curiosity than a missing ride. For me, it's worth the trade-off.
