Why can’t I use my points AND a coupon at checkout?

“The worst part is when the employees themselves don’t know what’s allowed. Makes you feel like you’re trying to pull a fast one when really, you just want to save a few bucks.”

That’s hit the nail on the head. Happened to me last week—tried to use my rewards points and a promo code at checkout, and the cashier just stared at me like I’d invented a new scam. Ended up feeling awkward enough that I just paid full price. I get that companies want to protect their margins, but if they’re going to have these “deals,” at least train staff and make the rules clear. Otherwise, it’s just a headache for everyone. Sometimes I wonder if it’s set up this way on purpose... wouldn’t be shocked.

I get the frustration, but I’m not totally convinced it’s some big scheme to confuse us. A lot of these systems just aren’t set up to handle stacking discounts, and the staff probably gets as little info as we do. I’ve worked retail before—half the time, the rules change every week and nobody tells you. Still, I agree it’s ridiculous how unclear everything is. If they want loyal customers, they should at least make it easy to use the rewards we’ve earned.

Yeah, I totally get where you’re coming from. It does feel like half the time, nobody—including the people working there—really knows what’s going on with these rewards programs. I remember trying to use my gas points and a promo code at the grocery store once, and the cashier looked at me like I’d asked for a free car. She even called over her manager, who just shrugged and said, “The computer won’t let you do both.”

I’m always curious if it’s actually a tech limitation or if they just don’t want us stacking deals because it cuts into their profit too much. I mean, you’d think in 2024 they could program a system that can handle points *and* coupons together... but maybe that’s wishful thinking.

Honestly, I wish they’d just put a clear sign up front or something. It’s not like we’re trying to game the system—we just want to use what we’ve earned without jumping through hoops.

It’s honestly baffling how inconsistent these systems are. I’ve had similar run-ins at higher-end retailers—sometimes the staff just shrugs, other times they’ll try to override the system, but usually it’s a hard no. I get that stacking discounts isn’t great for their bottom line, but if they’re offering both points and coupons, why not let us use them together? Has anyone actually seen a store that handles this smoothly, or is it just wishful thinking across the board?

- Totally get what you mean about the inconsistency.

“sometimes the staff just shrugs, other times they’ll try to override the system, but usually it’s a hard no.”
That’s been my experience too, especially at places like auto parts stores—sometimes they’ll bend the rules, sometimes it’s like talking to a brick wall.
- I’ve only seen smooth stacking at smaller, local shops where the owner’s behind the counter. Big chains? Not so much.
- Feels like a missed opportunity for customer loyalty, honestly. If you’re offering points and coupons, why not let folks use both?
- Maybe it’s just easier for them to say no than deal with the hassle... but it sure doesn’t make me want to come back.
