Why can’t I use my points AND a coupon at checkout?

Honestly, it drives me nuts when they act like it’s some huge technical hurdle. I once had a manager at a chain literally tell me, “the system won’t let us,” but then I watched her override it for another customer ten minutes later. Makes you wonder if it’s just about who complains the loudest or if they’re just picking and choosing when to follow the rules. Either way, it feels like they’re missing the point of having loyalty programs in the first place... isn’t the whole idea to keep us coming back?

I’ve always wondered if it’s really a “system” thing or if it’s just policy they bend when they feel like it. Like, is there actually a technical reason you can’t stack points and coupons, or is it just to keep folks from getting too good of a deal? I get that stores have to make money, but if the rules are flexible for some people, why not for everyone? Ever notice if certain locations are stricter than others?

I’ve actually asked a cashier about this before, and she said it’s mostly a system limitation—like, the register literally won’t let them stack certain discounts. But I’ve also seen managers override it for “special cases,” so it does seem a bit arbitrary sometimes. Some locations definitely play by the book more than others, especially in busier areas. It’s kind of a toss-up, honestly.

Yeah, I’ve run into this too. One time I tried to use my rewards points and a paper coupon at the same time, and the cashier just kinda shrugged and said the system wouldn’t let her do both. She even called the manager, but he just said “sorry, can’t do it.” I get why they have rules, but it’s a little frustrating when you see someone else get an override. Makes me second-guess if I should even bother asking or just play it safe and not push it.

I’ve had almost the exact same thing happen, and it’s honestly kind of discouraging when you’re just trying to maximize your savings. I get that stores have to draw the line somewhere, but it feels inconsistent. One time, I was told “no” flat out, and another time at a different location, the cashier just scanned both without blinking. No override, no fuss. Makes you wonder if it’s a training thing or if some stores are stricter than others.

From what I’ve read (and experienced), a lot of these point systems and coupons are run by separate systems on the backend. So even if the staff wanted to help, sometimes they literally can’t get both discounts to apply because the register won’t allow it. Still, when you see someone else get an exception, it’s hard not to feel like you’re missing out for following the rules.

I usually try to ask politely—sometimes it works, sometimes not. If I’m in a hurry or don’t want to hold up the line, I just pick whichever discount is better and move on. Not ideal, but arguing with cashiers never really gets me anywhere.

It would be nice if stores were more transparent about how these things work instead of leaving us guessing every time we check out. Maybe clearer signage or something in the app would help set expectations so you’re not left feeling awkward at the register.

Anyway, you’re definitely not alone in this. It’s one of those little annoyances that adds up over time... especially when every dollar counts these days.
