Title: Anyone else feel like AAA insurance isn't what it used to be?

I do wish they’d make the “authorized facility” thing clearer, though. Had to tow my car to a shop I’d never heard of once... not ideal.

That part really gets me too. I remember the first time my S-Class needed a tow and I just assumed I could pick the dealership or my usual mechanic. Nope—ended up at some random garage that didn’t even have the right diagnostic tools. It’s not just inconvenient, it can actually mess with your warranty or service records if you’re not careful.

Here’s how I’ve learned to deal with it, step by step:

1. Before you need a tow, check the list of “authorized facilities” in your area. It’s usually buried somewhere on their site or app, but it’s worth digging for. I keep a screenshot on my phone just in case.
2. If you break down, call AAA and *ask* if you can specify a shop. Sometimes they’ll let you pick from their list, but you have to be persistent.
3. If you’re particular about where your car goes (and who isn’t with a luxury vehicle?), tell the driver up front. They’re usually understanding, but they have to follow AAA’s rules unless you’re willing to pay extra for a longer tow.
4. After the fact, double-check your paperwork. I once had a claim denied because the shop wasn’t technically “authorized,” even though AAA sent me there.

It’s frustrating, but I try to see it as just another hoop to jump through with these services. Like you said, every plan has its fine print. Still, I totally get why it feels like AAA isn’t as straightforward as it used to be. The transparency just isn’t there anymore.

If it helps, you’re definitely not alone in feeling let down by how things have changed. It’s not just nostalgia—some of these policies really have shifted over the years. Just gotta stay one step ahead of the fine print, I guess...

That’s exactly what happened to us last year. Our minivan got towed to a place that didn’t even do the kind of repairs we needed. Ended up having to pay out of pocket to get it moved again. I get that there are rules, but it feels like they’re not really looking out for families who just want their car fixed right the first time. The “authorized facility” thing is way too vague, and honestly, it’s more hassle than it should be.

Yeah, that “authorized facility” thing can be a real headache. I’ve seen a lot of folks get tripped up by it, especially when you’re already stressed about the breakdown. It’s frustrating when you think you’re covered, but then end up paying extra just to get your car where it actually needs to go. Honestly, I wish they’d make the process clearer—half the time, people don’t even know which shops are on the list until it’s too late.

I get why they have rules (keeps costs down for everyone), but it does feel like there should be more flexibility, especially for families who rely on their vehicles every day. Had a similar situation with my own car a while back—ended up spending more than I expected just because of some fine print. You’re definitely not alone in feeling like it’s more hassle than it should be.

Yeah, I’ve run into that too. Had my truck towed last year and figured I’d just pick the closest shop, but nope—turns out it wasn’t on their “approved” list. Ended up paying for the extra miles myself. The weird thing is, I swear that shop used to be on their network years ago. Feels like they keep changing the rules or something. I get wanting to keep costs down, but man, when you’re stuck on the side of the road, you just want things to be simple.

Yeah, that’s super frustrating. I’ve noticed the network list keeps shrinking too. Used to be you could rely on just about any reputable shop, now it’s a guessing game. Feels like they’re making it harder for folks who actually use the service.
