If I end up stranded once in a blue moon, maybe waiting an hour or two isn’t the end of the world? But then again, I’d probably freak out if it actually happened.

That’s kind of where I get stuck too. Like, is paying extra every month really worth it for something that might never even happen? On the other hand, what if you break down somewhere sketchy or late at night... would you regret not having the “better” plan then? Also, I’m not sure if the cheaper options are really that much worse now, or if AAA just isn’t as ahead of the pack as it used to be. Has anyone actually compared response times lately? Just seems like everyone’s got issues these days, no matter who they’re with.

I’ve actually had both AAA and a couple of the newer roadside apps, and honestly, response times are all over the place. Sometimes AAA was quick, sometimes not. Once I waited almost three hours for a tow in the middle of nowhere—felt like forever. The “premium” plans sound good on paper, but if you’re mostly driving in populated areas, the basic coverage might be fine. I do get nervous about being stuck late at night, though... that’s when I start thinking maybe the extra cost is worth it. Hard to say if any one company’s really ahead anymore.

Yeah, waiting three hours for a tow is rough—been there myself, stuck with my old Mustang after a breakdown on a backroad. I get what you’re saying about the premium plans sounding good but not always feeling worth it, especially if you’re mostly in city areas. Here’s how I usually look at it:

First, I check where I actually drive most. If I’m cruising around town or hitting up car meets, basic coverage usually gets the job done. But for longer trips or late-night drives, I’ll double-check the fine print on what’s included (like how many free miles they’ll tow you, or if they’ll cover specialty vehicles). Sometimes the premium upgrade just makes sense for peace of mind, especially with older cars that can be a bit unpredictable.

Out of curiosity, has anyone tried those “pay-per-use” roadside services? I keep seeing ads but haven’t pulled the trigger yet. Wondering if they’re any faster or just the same old story with a new app.

I’ve looked into those pay-per-use apps, but honestly, I’m a little skeptical. The idea sounds great—just pay when you need it—but I wonder if it’s any quicker in practice. Last year, I tried one when my old Civic wouldn’t start, and the wait was still over two hours. Not exactly the “on-demand” vibe they advertise. Maybe it depends on your area? For now, I stick with basic coverage and just cross my fingers the car behaves.

I totally get what you mean. I tried one of those apps when my battery died at the grocery store, and it took almost three hours for someone to show up. Honestly, it felt just like waiting for AAA back in the day. Maybe it’s just luck of the draw?
