So yesterday, I parked my car on a pretty narrow street. When I opened the door, it bumped into these metal steps someone had sticking out from their parked truck. Left a noticeable scratch on my door...ugh. Am I responsible here or is it their fault for having steps sticking out like that?

Had something similar happen to me a few months back. Narrow street, tight parking, and some guy had these huge aftermarket steps sticking way out from his lifted truck. I opened my door without really checking carefully, and bam...nice little dent right in the middle of my door panel. Honestly, it sucked, but I had to admit it was mostly on me. Here's how I see it:

1. You parked your car knowing the street was narrow.
2. You opened your door without fully checking clearance.
3. Their steps might've been annoying, but they weren't exactly invisible or hidden.

Yeah, the steps were obnoxious and probably unnecessary, but ultimately, it's your responsibility to make sure the coast is clear before opening your door. Learned that the hard way myself...now I always glance twice before swinging the door open.

Yeah, gotta agree with you there. From an insurance standpoint, it's usually on whoever opens the door without checking. Annoying aftermarket steps or not, they're still part of the vehicle and visible enough. Seen plenty of similar claims, and it almost always lands on the person opening their door. Still, those oversized steps can be a real pain—especially in tight city parking...but hey, lesson learned, right?

Yeah, agreed on the insurance angle, but honestly, some of these aftermarket mods are borderline ridiculous. Had a similar issue once parked next to a lifted truck—could barely get out without scraping something. Makes me wonder, should there be clearer rules about how far these accessories can stick out? Or is it just on us to stay extra cautious around modded vehicles...

Yeah, I get the frustration, but honestly, clearer rules might just complicate things more. I've been driving older cars forever (budget life, lol), and I've learned the hard way to steer clear of anything that looks like it belongs in a monster truck rally. Sure, some mods are ridiculous, but at the end of the day, it's kinda on us to eyeball the situation and park accordingly. Annoying, yeah, but beats dealing with insurance headaches later...
