Do I really need extra insurance when renting a car in VA?

Honestly, I get the worry about rates going up. But I’ve found that paying for the rental company’s coverage isn’t always worth it, especially if your own policy already covers rentals.

“if something happens, will my own insurance even cover me, or will they jack up my rates?”
In my experience, most insurers do cover rentals, but yeah, a claim could mean higher premiums. Still, I’d rather risk a rate hike than pay extra every single time I rent. Guess it depends how often you rent and how much peace of mind is worth to you.

I get where you’re coming from, but I actually lean the other way. Here’s how I look at it: if you use your own insurance and something goes wrong, you’re not just dealing with higher rates—you might have to pay a deductible, and claims can stick around for years on your record. One time, I had a minor scrape in a rental, used my own policy, and my rates jumped way more than the cost of the rental coverage would’ve been. For me, paying a bit extra upfront is worth avoiding that headache... especially if I’m in an unfamiliar area or driving a car I’m not used to. Just my two cents.
