I hear you on the privacy front—some of these apps ask for way more than they need. I had one that wanted access to my contacts and microphone, which made zero sense for tracking mileage. Felt like a stretch, honestly.

Here’s what I’ve run into:

- Tried Metromile for a bit. They pushed the dongle hard, but I was swapping cars for road trips and rentals, and it was a pain moving the thing around. Plus, it kept disconnecting in older cars.
- Root wanted me to run their app 24/7. Not a fan. My phone battery hated it, and I didn’t love the idea of them knowing every time I hit up a drive-thru or took a detour.
- I did find one smaller company (can’t remember the name, sorry) that let you snap odometer pics every month. It was clunky, but honestly, I’d take that over another device or app tracking me everywhere. Problem was, their rates weren’t great and their customer service was… let’s say “old school.”

Honestly, I don’t think it’s wishful thinking—there are still a few companies out there that’ll let you self-report, but they’re getting rare. Most of the big names want either a dongle or an app now. I get why—less fraud risk for them—but it’s annoying if you value privacy or just don’t want to deal with tech headaches.

If you’re switching cars a lot, the dongle thing is just not practical. I’ve tried tossing it in my bag and forgetting it, then realizing halfway through a trip that it’s not plugged in and my mileage isn’t being tracked right. Total hassle.

I’d rather snap a pic of my odometer once a month than have some app listening in or draining my battery all day. But maybe I’m just old school about this stuff...

I get the privacy concerns, but honestly, I’ve found the dongle to be less of a hassle than dealing with monthly odometer photos. I’m not great at remembering deadlines, so at least the device just does its thing. Swapping cars is a pain, though—I’ll give you that. Still, the rates I’ve gotten with the dongle have been way better than any self-reporting option I’ve seen. Guess it’s a trade-off...

Totally get where you’re coming from—those monthly odometer pics are just begging to be forgotten, at least in my world. The dongle’s like a little spy, but hey, if it saves me cash, I’ll let it judge my driving. Swapping cars is the real headache, though... last time I did it, I spent 20 minutes trying to pry the thing out with a fork. Worth it for the lower rates, but man, they don’t make it easy.

I swear, those dongles are like the world’s tiniest escape artists. Ever had one refuse to come out no matter what you do? I’m curious—has anyone actually broken their OBD port trying to yank one out, or is it just me worrying about it?

Oh, I feel this on a spiritual level. The first time I tried to pull one of those dongles out, I was convinced I'd either snap the thing in half or rip my whole OBD port out of the dash. Honestly, who designed those things to fit tighter than a jar lid after arm day?

I've seen a couple folks get worried about damaging their port, but in reality, it usually takes more force than you'd think to actually break something. That said, I've heard stories about people cracking the plastic trim or bending the pins if they're not careful. So your concern isn't totally unfounded—but most of the time, it's just stubborn plastic and nerves.

Mileage-based insurance is great for some, but man... the dongle drama is real. Anyone else ever get paranoid they’ll set off an airbag or something? Or is that just me overthinking again?
