Honestly, I don’t get the guilt over a scenic route. If I’m paying by the mile, I figure it’s my choice how I use those miles. The repair shop thing is a pain, but I just snap a photo of the odometer before and after—makes it easier to argue if there’s a dispute. As for the tracker, I trust the tech more than I trust traditional insurers to get my mileage right. If something goes wrong, at least there’s data to back me up.

I get what you’re saying about trusting the tracker, but I’ve had some weird luck with those things. One time, my tracker glitched and logged me as driving 40 miles when I’d barely left my driveway. Had to call customer service and explain I wasn’t moonlighting as a pizza delivery guy. Still, I stick with pay-per-mile because my rates are way better than the regular ones, even if I have to babysit the tech sometimes. The odometer photo trick is a lifesaver though—learned that after a shop “test drove” my car for lunch...

Yeah, those trackers can be a bit sketchy sometimes. Mine once counted a tow as a 15-mile joyride—took a while to sort that out. Still, I’m with you, the savings are worth the hassle. I’m just not sure I’ll ever fully trust the tech...

Yeah, I get what you mean about not fully trusting the trackers. They’re glitchy. Mine once logged a trip while my car was parked at the airport for a week—turns out someone bumped it in the lot and it counted as “driving.” Took forever to get that sorted, and customer service just kept reading off a script. I still think the tech’s half-baked sometimes.

But honestly, the price difference is hard to ignore. Traditional insurance was gouging me for years since I barely drive outside of errands and grocery runs. Switched to Metromile last year and cut my bill by almost half. Still, every time I check the app I wonder what random “trip” it’ll log next. Not sure if other companies have better hardware or if it’s just the nature of these devices.

I do wish there was a way to verify your mileage yourself, instead of just trusting whatever number pops up in their system. Until then, yeah, I’m always double-checking my statements and screenshots just in case they mess up again. The savings are worth it for now, but if they ever start messing with my rates over their own mistakes, I’m gone.

Guess that’s just where we are with this stuff—good idea, but not exactly seamless yet.

Yeah, the tech’s definitely not perfect. I had a similar thing happen—my tracker once thought my car was on a road trip when it was just idling in the driveway while I cleaned it. I started snapping pics of my odometer every month, just in case. Not sure if it helps, but at least I feel like I’ve got some backup if they ever question my mileage. The savings are nice, but man, I wish these companies would let us verify stuff ourselves instead of playing detective every billing cycle.
