WHY DOES FILING A TOTAL LOSS CLAIM FEEL LIKE HOMEWORK?
That “clear view” thing gets people every time. I’ve seen claims kicked back for the tiniest shadow or glare—sometimes it feels like they’re just looking for a reason to slow things down. I get why they want proof, but honestly, half the time it’s just someone in a cubicle following a checklist to the letter. I had a client once who had to retake photos three times because the reflection of a tree branch was “obstructing” the VIN. It’s not like anyone’s trying to fake a bumper with a shadow on it.
The wet signature thing is another one that drives me nuts. We’re in 2024 and they still want ink on paper? Feels like they’re stuck in the ‘90s. I always wonder if these hoops actually stop fraud or if it’s just about covering their own backsides.
Curious—has anyone actually had a claim go through on the first try, or is this just the standard runaround now?
Never had one go through on the first try, not even close. The VIN photo thing is wild—mine got bounced because my thumb was “too close” to the sticker. I get they need to be careful, but it’s a little much sometimes. Wet signatures? Don’t get me started...

I get the frustration, but honestly, I’d rather they be picky about stuff like VIN photos than risk some mix-up down the line. Had a friend whose claim got delayed for weeks because of a digit error. It’s annoying in the moment, but I kind of see why they’re strict. Wet signatures though... yeah, that feels outdated.

- Totally get the frustration with VIN photos. Had to retake mine three times because the reflection off the windshield made one number look weird. Thought I was being careful, but apparently not careful enough.
- Honestly, after hearing stories about claims getting held up for a single wrong digit, I’m kind of glad they’re sticklers. Fixing a paperwork mistake after the fact is way more of a headache than just snapping another photo.
- Wet signatures, though... that one baffles me. Feels like we’re stuck in 2005. Everything else is digital but then you’re hunting down a printer and scanner (or worse, fax machine) for one page. If they can verify my ID with a selfie and a barcode, why not a digital signature?
- Filing a total loss claim really does feel like a homework assignment—except if you mess up, you don’t just lose points, you lose weeks.
WET SIGNATURES STILL? REALLY?
I hear you on the VIN photo thing—one glare or smudge and you’re back at square one. It’s tedious, but honestly, a single wrong digit can derail the whole process, and then it’s a mess for everyone. As for wet signatures... yeah, I wish that would change too. There are legal requirements in some states that still make them necessary, even if it feels like we’re stuck in the past. Until those rules catch up, we’re kind of stuck juggling printers and scanners. Not ideal, but it’s all about making sure everything holds up if there’s ever an audit or dispute down the line.
