WHY DOES FILING A TOTAL LOSS CLAIM FEEL LIKE HOMEWORK?
I kinda get why they’re picky, though. If the VIN is off by even one number, it could mess up the whole claim or even get the wrong car totaled. It’s annoying, but I guess it’s better than fixing a mistake later. I’d rather double-check than have my claim denied over something small. Still, uploading a video sounds way easier... as long as it doesn’t take forever to process.
- Yeah, double-checking the VIN is a pain, but it’s one of those things that seems tiny until it isn’t. I’ve seen someone get their payout delayed for weeks because a single digit was off - just brutal.
- Insurance companies are sticklers for details because they’re trying to avoid fraud and mix-ups. If they pay out on the wrong car, it’s a mess for everybody.
- The video upload thing is interesting. It’d be faster than scanning paperwork, but I wonder how well their systems actually process those videos. If you’re stuck waiting for their tech to catch up, it might not save much time.
- Honestly, I wish they’d let you use your phone to scan the VIN directly into the form. Most phones can read barcodes now... seems easier than typing out 17 characters every time.
- At the end of the day, yeah, it feels like homework. But if it saves me from arguing with an adjuster down the line, I’ll take the extra few minutes up front.
I get why they’re so strict about the VIN, but it does feel like overkill sometimes. I’ve double-checked mine so many times I practically have it memorized. The tech side is interesting - if they could just let us scan the barcode, that would cut down on errors and save everyone time. Has anyone actually tried one of those video uploads? Curious if it really speeds things up or just adds another layer of waiting.
I swear, after all this, I could recite my VIN in my sleep. The video upload thing sounded promising, but when I tried it, I spent more time figuring out the “right angle” than actually filming. Not sure it saved me any hassle - just felt like a new way to stress about paperwork. Barcode scanning would be genius though... why aren’t we there yet?

Honestly, I ask myself that every single time I help someone through this process. You’d think with all the tech out there, we’d have something as basic as VIN barcode scanning nailed down. I remember a client last year who had to upload photos of their odometer, VIN, and every ding on the car - took them hours. The video thing is cool in theory, but yeah, it just adds a new layer of “am I doing this right?” to the mix. Sometimes I wonder if the paperwork is half the reason people dread claims more than the accident itself.
