Why does insurance cost more in Houston than Austin or Dallas?

I get what you’re saying about driving history, but I’m not totally convinced it’s the main reason Houston’s rates are so wild. I’ve lived in all three cities, and even with a clean record, my insurance shot up when I moved here. Maybe it’s just the sheer number of cars and how crazy the roads get during rush hour? I also wonder if stuff like car theft rates or uninsured drivers plays a bigger part than we realize. Anyone else notice their rates jump for reasons they can’t really pin down?

I’ve wondered about this too, honestly. My record isn’t spotless, but even factoring that in, Houston’s rates still seem higher than what I’d expect. Maybe it’s not just the traffic or theft rates - could weather play a role? Flooding and hail are pretty common here compared to Austin or Dallas. Has anyone noticed if their premiums spike after big storms, or is that just coincidence?

- Weather’s definitely a factor. After Harvey, my premium shot up about 15% at renewal. No claims, just the risk profile changing, I guess.
- Houston has more uninsured drivers than Austin or Dallas (last stat I saw was ~16% in Harris County). That can push rates up for everyone, not just those with tickets or accidents.
- Traffic density: commutes here are brutal compared to Austin, and more time on the road = more chances for accidents.
- Hail and flooding claims spike after storms. My neighbor had two cars totaled in one storm last year - insurance paid out, but next renewal was painful.

I’m curious if anyone’s seen their rates drop after a few years with no claims? Or does it just creep up no matter what? Sometimes feels like we’re paying for everyone else’s mess...

I’ve actually seen my rate drop a bit after three years with no claims or tickets, but it wasn’t dramatic - maybe 5%? Feels like the base rate just keeps inching up regardless. I do wonder if shopping around more aggressively would help, but it’s a hassle. And yeah, it’s frustrating paying for risks you can’t control, like uninsured drivers or weather.

I’ve noticed the same thing - my rate barely budged even after years of clean driving. I remember when I moved from Dallas to Houston, my premium jumped way more than I expected. The agent blamed it on “higher risk factors,” but honestly, it just feels like Houston drivers get dinged for stuff we can’t control, like crazy hailstorms or the sheer number of uninsured folks. I’ve tried shopping around a couple times, but the hassle usually outweighs the tiny savings. Sometimes I wonder if it’s just the price of living here...
