“not getting tickets is pretty much the only thing they can measure that actually relates to how risky you are on the road.”

But is it, though? I mean, there’s dash cams and those apps that track your driving now—hard braking, speeding, whatever. If insurance companies really wanted to reward careful drivers, why not use that data? Maintenance isn’t everything, sure, but if you’re already tracking people’s phones for discounts, why not go further? Just feels like they pick what’s easiest for them, not what’s actually fair.

Honestly, I get what you're saying—there's a ton of tech that could give a clearer picture of how someone drives. But from the risk side, collecting and analyzing all that data opens up privacy and accuracy concerns, not to mention the cost. If a dash cam glitches or an app misreads a situation, who's responsible for a rate hike based on that? I wonder if people would be comfortable with insurers having a live feed of their daily drives... Would you ever opt in for that kind of monitoring if it meant a bigger discount?

I get the privacy worry, but honestly, most of the time the tech isn’t even that accurate yet. I’ve seen claims where the app flagged “hard braking” just because someone avoided a squirrel. Then people get dinged for stuff that’s not even risky driving. If you’re a careful driver, maybe it’s worth the discount, but I’d want to know exactly how they’re measuring things before I’d trust it. Wouldn’t want my rates going up because of a software bug or a random glitch.

Yeah, I’ve noticed that too—my app once flagged me for “aggressive acceleration” when I was just merging onto the highway. It’s kind of wild how sensitive those things are. I’d definitely want to see a breakdown of what counts against you before signing up. The discount sounds nice, but not if it’s gonna ding you for stuff you can’t control.

That’s honestly been my gripe too. I drive a pretty powerful sedan, and the telematics app once flagged me for “hard braking” when I was just avoiding a squirrel darting across the road. It’s like, come on, real life isn’t a test track. Still, I get why they want to monitor habits, but it’d be nice if they accounted for stuff like merging or sudden stops that aren’t reckless. The discount is tempting, but yeah—knowing exactly what triggers those dings makes a huge difference.
