Had a similar GPS mishap near Sioux Falls once—ended up on some farmer's tractor path. No damage thankfully, but it got me thinking: insurance-wise, would that even count as a legit road if something did happen? Seems like a gray area...

Definitely a valid concern—GPS mishaps like that are surprisingly common. From an insurance standpoint, it's usually less about whether the path is officially recognized and more about whether your policy covers "off-road" incidents. Most standard auto policies cover accidents on public roads, parking lots, and even private driveways. But once you're on something clearly not intended for regular vehicle use (like a tractor path through farmland), things can get tricky.

Typically, insurers look at whether you were reasonably following GPS directions or intentionally going off-road. If your GPS guided you there and it genuinely looked like a road at first glance, most carriers would likely treat it as an honest mistake and cover damages under collision coverage (assuming you have it). I've handled similar claims before, and as long as there's no clear negligence or intentional off-roading involved, insurers tend to be pretty understanding.

Still, policies vary quite a bit, so it's always worth double-checking your specific coverage details or giving your agent a quick call to clarify. Glad nothing happened in your case though...I've seen some pretty wild GPS stories end with expensive repairs.

Haha, tell me about it...my GPS once confidently directed me onto what turned out to be someone's private hunting trail. Thankfully no damage, but explaining that to insurance would've been fun.

Haha, GPS mishaps are way too relatable...

- First time buying insurance here, and honestly, I'm terrified of the day I actually need to file a claim.
- My GPS once insisted I drive through what looked like an abandoned farmyard—complete with rusty tractors and suspiciously territorial chickens.
- Thankfully, I backed out before any real damage happened, but can you imagine explaining "chicken-related damages" to an insurance rep?
- Seriously though, these insurance horror stories make me wonder if I should just stick to printed maps...

GPS definitely has its moments... I once had mine confidently direct me onto a golf course service road—imagine explaining tire marks on pristine fairways to insurance. Thankfully, I caught it early enough to avoid embarrassment (and a hefty bill). Curious though, has anyone here actually had to explain something equally bizarre to their insurance rep?
