I've been driving in SD for over a decade now, and honestly, having both digital and paper copies has saved me some headaches. Digital is great until your phone randomly decides to reboot (happened to me once near Rapid City—talk about timing...). A simple printed backup tucked away in the glovebox doesn't hurt and gives you peace of mind without much hassle.

Good point about the phone rebooting—tech can be finicky, especially in older cars like mine where charging ports aren't always reliable. Personally, I stick to paper copies for insurance and registration because digital just feels too uncertain. Plus, there's something reassuring about physically handing over a document if you're pulled over. Curious though, has anyone here actually had trouble with law enforcement accepting digital proof in SD? Heard mixed stories on that front...

I get the hesitation about digital insurance cards. A couple years back, I decided to go digital because I figured it'd be one less thing cluttering up my glovebox (which is already stuffed with napkins, ketchup packets, and who knows what else...). Anyway, I got pulled over near Sioux Falls for a busted taillight—nothing major, thankfully—but when I went to show the officer my insurance on my phone, wouldn't you know it, my battery was at 2%. Talk about timing.

The officer was pretty chill about it though. He just waited patiently while I scrambled to find the right app and prayed my phone didn't die mid-scroll. It worked out fine in the end, but after that mini heart attack moment, I printed out a copy and stuck it back in the glovebox chaos as backup.

I've heard from friends that most SD officers are okay with digital proof these days, but there's always that one story floating around about someone running into trouble because their phone froze or the officer wasn't familiar with digital cards yet. Seems like it's more of an individual officer thing rather than a statewide issue.

Honestly though, I'm still kinda torn. Digital is convenient until it's suddenly not. And paper feels safer until you spill coffee on it or accidentally toss it during a glovebox cleanout (guilty as charged). Guess there's no perfect solution...

I've been using digital insurance cards for a while now, and honestly, it's been pretty smooth sailing. A few quick thoughts from my experience:

- Never had an issue with officers accepting digital proof, even when traveling through South Dakota. Most seem pretty familiar with it by now.
- Battery anxiety is real though—I keep a charger in my car just for that reason. Learned that lesson the hard way when my phone died right before a meeting once (not insurance-related, but still...).
- Paper backups are always good peace of mind. I stash one in the glovebox chaos too, right next to the fancy leather manual I never read and some random receipts from road trips.

Funny enough, the only time I've ever had trouble was actually with paper. Spilled coffee all over my glovebox once (long story involving a drive-thru mishap), and my insurance card was basically unreadable. Thankfully, the officer just laughed it off when I showed him the soggy mess and pulled up the digital version instead.

Seems like there's no foolproof method—just gotta pick your poison. Curious though, has anyone ever had trouble with digital cards outside of SD? Wonder if it's more common in certain states or regions...

I've mostly had good luck with digital cards too, but I did run into a snag once in rural Montana. Officer wasn't exactly thrilled about squinting at my cracked phone screen in bright sunlight... awkward. Since then, I've been paranoid enough to keep a paper copy tucked away. Digital's convenient, but tech glitches always seem to strike at the worst possible moment, ya know?
