Which Roadside Help Would You Trust More: AAA or Your Insurance Company?

Insurance companies really do seem to look for any excuse to raise rates these days...

Yeah, that’s been my experience too. I used my insurance for a jump once - just a dead battery, nothing major - and next renewal my premium crept up. Didn’t even realize it would count against me. Since then, I just pay for AAA. It’s not cheap, but at least I know I’m not messing with my insurance rates every time my car acts up. Insurance companies always find a way to nickel and dime you, it feels like.

I get why people are wary of using insurance for little stuff, but I’m not totally convinced it’s always a bad move. I just got my first policy and asked the agent about this - she said roadside calls don’t always affect rates, depends on the company and how often you use it. Maybe I’m being naive, but I kinda want to trust what I’m paying for? Still, hearing stories like yours makes me wonder if AAA’s worth the extra cost just for peace of mind.

Honestly, I get the appeal of trusting your insurance for everything you’re paying for, but there are a few things I’d watch out for:

- Insurance roadside help is sometimes slower than AAA, at least in my experience. Had a flat last winter and waited almost two hours through my insurer.
- Even if your agent says it “shouldn’t” affect rates, I’ve seen small claims pop up on CLUE reports later. Some companies use any activity as a reason to bump rates or deny discounts.
- AAA’s not perfect, but their service has been more consistent for me - plus, you get extra perks like maps or travel discounts.

I guess it comes down to how much you drive and how often you think you’ll need it. For daily commuters like me, the peace of mind with AAA’s been worth the extra few bucks.

I’ve seen a lot of folks surprised when a “simple” roadside call through their insurer ends up on their CLUE report. It doesn’t always impact rates, but it’s not unheard of either. Personally, I’ve had AAA for years and their response time’s been more reliable - though I’ll admit, there was one time they took forever during a snowstorm. Insurance roadside is convenient if you don’t want another membership, but I’d be cautious about using it for anything but emergencies. The peace of mind with AAA’s consistency is hard to beat, especially if you’re on the road a lot.

I had no idea those insurance roadside calls could show up on your CLUE report until a friend mentioned it last year - kind of a sneaky surprise, honestly. We’ve had AAA for ages, mostly because we do a lot of family road trips and I just trust them more. There was one time we got stuck with a flat tire at a rest stop and AAA had someone there in under 30 minutes, which was a lifesaver with two cranky kids in the back. I get the convenience of using insurance, but I’d rather not risk it messing with my rates down the line.
